What would mold in the brew look like?

I took a second hydrometer reading one week in (see my post here) and I noticed some sort of "schmutz" floating on the top of the wort. It could be remnants of the fermenting... but I've been nervous all week about mold. What would mold look like and do I throw the batch out if it is?

    Still going?

It has been one week exactly and I have had no visible or audible fermenting action. I took an hydrometer reading this evening and I got 1.024... which means something happened, but a 4.3 ABV seems REALLY low... is it still going do you think? Thanks for the help... this weather has been...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

My corgi is the best dog I have ever owned. And I'm not really an "animal person". Early this year we (my wife and I) learned of an artist named Tasha Tudor and I loved her cute drawings of the Corgis of Corgiville. So I decided to do a drawing for fun of our corgi (Wiggles) in tartan with...

    New label for CJB Brewery

Now I gotta ask... is the barcode a "special" barcode? As in a name or something? Or is it just a placemark and I'm trying to read too much into it?

    Scottish Ale

HOKEY SMOKES! My buddy did an amazing label from my image. He said he could make it better... and he wasn't kidding! By the way, that's my clan tartan. GLEE! I still have no idea for the Halloween beer... although it's probably too late now (I like them to age a bit). So, I guess it's...

    Scottish Ale

But then I get into the problem of what to dress the Corgi in if he's welsh. (insert insulting British joke here) "Royal Corgi" is just the name of my "brewery"... so expect to see the guy in lots of different outfits. I'm brewing a Halloween beer next.

    Scottish Ale

...thinks about it... looks at my corgi.... continues to think about it.... Hmmm.... perhaps. I'll try to get a picture in a few weeks when it's ready to drink. Anyways, all kidding aside, I agree with the idea to put a banner at the top... I'll ask my friend how to do that on Corel 9...

    Scottish Ale

So I just finished my label for my (just this weekend) bottled ale. Lemme know what you all think.

    Vanilla?

Ooh that sounds good. Think I'll make it for my father-in-law for his birthday (new year's day). Have to make a groovy label for it. I'll keep you all updated if I need help when I get ready to make it near the end of September.

Looking for a holiday brew recipe

WOAH! That sounds so good! Is this that recipe?

Ok, so how the heck do I make my own labels??

I am working on my own as we speak using Corel X. I just looked at what other beer labels look like and am similating those (oval, banner at the top, an image in the middle, and words below in a font). Taking a look at places that DO labels for beer might be good so you can get ideas on how...

    Vanilla?

Thanks. Sounds like a difficult brew though. Perhaps I should try a few more complexer beers and see how it goes with those first. But I'll look for that thread. EDIT: THREAD IS HERE Thanks a lot.

    Vanilla?

So my father in-law is very interested in me making beers. He asked me if there was a way to make a beer that tasted like a vanilla cream soda. I was thinking it might be along the lines of a pale ale... but I'm unsure. Has this been done?

    yeast problems...HELP!

sounds like we had a similar problem today. I was extremely worried about my latest batch (a Scottish Ale brewed this past Sunday) as I had added my dry yeast at about (stupid me) 79 degrees. It didn't start bubbling until this morning. Yeah. Almost 40 hours later! Now it's going pretty...

    Hey there everyone

Happy to be a part of this community. I have done 5 beers since 1999 but have been aching to do more as I forgot how much fun (and how rewarding) it was. I started my latest (6th brew) this past Sunday. It's a Scottish Ale and I'm stoked to see how it goes. Hope I can be a good member here...
