    fermentation questions

ill check out hop teas, thank you. ive had this issue before with a few 5 gallon brews when i first started doing AG brews, and i chalked it up to not having the hops bag loose enough or not using enough early hops. It just seems odd that the wort tasted fantastic, and bitter, but one came...

    fermentation questions

first, thanks for looking around, much appreciated. second, what an interesting idea. I have the beer cold crashing currently, however, i believe that i will keg 4 gallons, leave one in the primary, and try this out.

    fermentation questions

Thanks, i dont intend to combine them, however ill read through the thread and see if it helps. read the first, page, not quite the same problem as me. Mine mellowed in the primary and i dont want it to. That guy had one too bitter and wanted it to mellow out.

    fermentation questions

ok, so lots of text for a quick question, but im trying to explain my process to help with the answers. Im brewing AG, 10 gallon batches. I just brewed a stone IPA clone recipe from edwort. Everything came out perfect, hit my numbers right on, 1.066 was og. tasted wort and bitterness was...

    New brewing fool in Kentucky.

gotta find a good source, but i figure its KY so it cant be that hard to find one. Im thinking mostly 2row and wheat, 2row is a staple in 99% of the beers out there and i like wheat beers :) Ill pm you once i find somewhere.

yep i probably wouldnt be able to host till after july got too much going on the next couple months, but id like to meet some brewers close to me before then, even if just getting together in crestwood or lagrange for a few drinks at a restaurant like the irish rover.

ive been there, and the prices are pretty close to the lhbs off westport road. I would really like to cut that price in half by getting grain in bulk with a few others who are interested.

Thanks for mentioning that, that's one reason I want to call. When searching on the subject Ive have seen people post and say that feed stores will often carry what brewers are looking for if you can get it before they add feed ingredients to it. I just did a search for grain elevators in...

Doesn't have to be a bar, nice restaurants in the area that still serve. I'm good with a meetup to joint brew though as well, I can probably even host as long as no one gets toooo drunk, wife and kids..... Im on a lake too, so we can fish while we make some beer.

might just check welders supply down by the fairgrounds. last time i was there they had a ton of co2 tanks around and looked they might sell or rent them pretty cheap. you probably dont need a 20# tank (if you are trying to save money), i have a 5 lb tank and have probably gone though 10-20...

if nothing else, we need to buy grain in bulk together (those that are doing AG). Im seeing people say that they are paying ~30 for 50lb bags that way, and id love to get that type of price. ive been sorta looking around to find a grain elevator in the area, im sure there are a few. Saw Sligo...

I got a 9gallon for 50 from amazon, free shipping with prime membership. 9 gal is almost too small though for a 90 min boil on a 6 gal batch, I'd recommend looking for a used keg cheap somewhere and getting a turkey fryer. Better to buy big now so you don't have to buy again when you move up...

You can start BIAB with almost nothing extra, and still stick to smaller batches till you get some bigger carboys/cook pots. I started with a 3gal pot from Walmart that cost probably $15 and a paint straining bag from lowes that was ~$3. Should do some easy PG for Mr. Beer sized equipment and...

Don't feel bad. I liked extract and then PG while I did it. AG just make me feel like I control it from beginning to end, so when they taste great I can say "I made that" and when they taste bad I can say " crap I can't believe I made that"! I have a habit of throwing myself into my hobbies 100%...

my first 3 ag taste really bad

i was using a smaller bag that i had bought at my local LHBS. It worked really well for PG when doing ~8lbs of grain or less, but just wasnt the right thing for larger brews and didnt fit over the entire pot i had moved up to. After reading up a bit i should have made my own, that way i...

    American IPA Wounded Knee IPA

in this thread it says that its better to toast your grain before crushing, but that it can be done afterwards, just for a shorter time and to keep a closer eye on it (20 min maybe?). also i keep a pie pan of water on the bottom rack when i toast to help moisten the grain and keep it from...

my first 3 ag taste really bad

Thanks, I will check my water Ph, thanks to everyone for pointing to it, and thanks ShamelessDog for the explanation of why AG is affected but not PG. Its easy and cheap enough to do, i saw some $5 kits recently at an lhbs and i know fish stores carry kits as well.
