First yeast starter -- sanitation fail -- pitch it or pitch it (out)

Figured it wasn't a slam dunk answer either way...it's a 10.65 OG so I can probably get by just throwing a vial of wlp001 in there...

First yeast starter -- sanitation fail -- pitch it or pitch it (out)

Thanks vegan. I had read both approaches (airlock vs foil), mainly used the airlock since I bought that cute little stopper :-). I'm probably going to use it...just looking for someone to say "no you idiot, don't pitch that!!!

First yeast starter -- sanitation fail -- pitch it or pitch it (out)

Decided it was time to start trying out yeast starters, especially since I'm about to brew a relatively big OG beer. Until now I have always directly pitched primarily white labs (but also wyeast smack packs) and have had good results. Anyway, I haven't bought a flask for growing starters in...

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

Well, I've got to rig up a long handled brush or something to get the scotchbrite down to the bottom, beyond the point where my forearm gets stuck in the opening all winnie the pooh style, but I got most of the stone off of there with a variety of acids (StarSan, CLR, Lemishine soaks) and elbow...

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

I could have just driven down to the shop and replaced it, but it's gotten personal at this point in time. Well that and I have a work project that I may be procrastinating on :D I think I'll get it, but the downside is that my scotchbrite was a bit too abrasive, so there are some scratches...

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

I was actually wondering if Lemishine might do the trick. Thanks. So I have got a LOT but not ALL of the stone out, after the long soak with StarSan and then the CLR attack and then some work with a scotchbrite. Still needs more work in places I couldn't reach last night, or couldn't see...

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

Actually I've moved on to some CLR which seems to be loosening up the scale/stone. I suspect I'll still require some scrubbing, even with the CLR treatment.

    Still soaking.

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

Thanks for all the help everyone. I had starsan sitting in the other keg, so I just transferred over to the nasty one, added effectively another dose (so it's almost double strength) and will give it a nice acid soak (that's what I was trying to do with the vinegar soak I gave it, but suspect...

    How to work a siphon

I have an auto-siphon, but I've seen people take a bottle of water (sealed, so relatively sanitary one would presume), fill the siphon hose with it, then let it start flowing... with the outward flow sorta taking place of your mouth's suction.

    Newbie Keg Cleaning Question

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or over in equipment&sanitation, but I figured since I'm a newbie asking a (probably VERY) newbie question, I'd do it here. First let me say: this isn't a general "how do I clean a keg" question. I've read a lot and I've done it a bunch of times now...

    Partial Mash in a Cooler

Hi... I found one thread on the topic on search, with a few responses, but thought I'd follow up with an additional question if the mods and everyone else doesn't mind :cross: Here's the thread I found: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/partial-mash-using-mash-tun-instead-bag-309952/...

    Newbie StarSan question

Thanks everyone! Next batch I'll buy some distilled water to make it with, the tap water is pretty hard here in San Diego.

    Newbie StarSan question

I've read a lot over at the appropriate forum, including the long sticky, but still wanted to get a take on this. I santized my keg a week ago and saved the starsan in a 6 gallon fermenter bucket (with lid -- though one very adventurous fruit fly got in before I thought to stick a bubbler in...
