    Mashing in a 50qt Cooler - Limitations?

I have one of those igloo ice cube 50qt coolers that I have turned into a mash tun. I'm planning a big brew soon and I'm wondering what are the limitations on the mash tun so I don't run into issues. My recipe for 10 gallons of blackIPA is calling for 31.5 lb of grain. According to rackers...

    Two Yeasts, One Stir Plate

So let's say I am doing a 10 gallon brew day with the intention of fermenting two 5 gallon batches of the same wort with 2 different yeasts. I have but one stir plate. If I grow one batch of yeast up so it's ready a few days ahead of time, take it off the stir plate and put it in the fridge so I...

    Effects of De-bittered Black Malt

I am putting together a recipe for my next brew day and thought I'd try making a Black IPA. To do this, my intent is to take a standard IPA recipe and add enough Debittered Black Malt to bring it to a black color. According to Beersmith, that's somewhere between .5lb and .75 lb for 5 gallons...

    Frozen Beer - Any issues?

So this weekend, being the genius I am, I decided that serving beer in the low 40s was too warm. I upped the coldness control on the kegerator to try to get it a few degrees cooler. Well, I did it and I ended up freezing a few bottles of beer. They're just about thawed now, but will it mess up...

    quick advice on hop substitution

had a recipe for an ipa that called for 1 oz of 14% columbus at 60min and 1oz for dry hop. the HBS didn't have columbus so i got 3oz 9% centennial. (3x9 = 28. 2x14 = 28. AAU's about equivalent.) So, should I just do 1.5 at 60 minutes and dry hop 1.5oz, or should I go put 2oz in at 60 and dry hop...

    A whole sack o' malt

I'm looking to do a few AG brews in the future so want to make it as affordable as possible. I don't have a local HBS that's any good and shipping grain is expensive. Anyway, I'll be out in PA this weekend and thought maybe I could swing by a store on my way home to pick up a sack. Here's the...

Fermenting a Saison and Dry Yeast

Brewed Jamil's Specialty Saison (from Brewing Classic Styles) this last weekend. It went really well. I hit my pre-boil gravity dead on for the first time ever. I should have boiled more to get the gravity up to 1.070, but I finished at 1.065, so good enough by me. Anyway, I'm fermenting right...

    Am I infected? HELP!

I am about to transfer my beer into a secondary. It's been in primary about 2 and a half weeks. I look into the carboy and see the following: pic So, am I overly worried or am I infected? This is my peanut butter porter which included actual peanut butter. So maybe it's just oils floating on...

How do I get the stuff from the bottom?

Tomorrow is my first brew day with my modified 15 gallon kettle. I am doing a 5 gallon brew (my peanut butter cup porter!). I just installed the Zymico Weld-B-Gone weldless spigot and the bazooka screen. Everything is fine except for there's about a gallon of dead space under the spigot. I guess...

Drilling a kettle for a spigot

So, my wife got me a 15 gallon kettle for Christmas and my sister got me the Zymico Weld-b-gone Kettle Conversion Kit. Sweet, right? So, anyone have any advice for where to put the hole? It needs a 7/8" hole, which should be easy enough. Is this tough to do? I don't want to F up my kettle...

    Bayou Burners

I know it's been asked before, but I want to ask again. I am getting a bunch of brewing equipment for christmas, including a barley crusher and a 15 gallon pot. I want to get a burner too, but am unsure whether the Bayou Classic KAB5 (banjo) is really better than the SQ14. KAB5 appears to have...

Results from my first AG brew

I've seen a lot of posts up about people's first AG brew and I think that's great. So, I thought I'd post my results too. First though I'd like to say that I got 90% of the inspiration to go AG from reading this board. Using the boards here I was able to put together a cheap MLT using a 5...

Never made cider before - need inspiration

I have an Ordinary Bitter that is just about done fermenting and my friend wanted to use the yeast cake to make a cider. Fine by me. I'm not using it, right? So we decided to split the batch of cider. After I rack out the bitter, I am going to put in 4 gallons of cider he picked up and then...

    Peanut Butter Cup Porter?

Coming off of a decently received Strawberry Wheat, my wife suggested we make a Peanut Butter and Chocolate beer. (I like keeping her involved in the brewing so that she'll be okay with me spending money on it. Also, I get to have a kegerator in the dining room.) So I've been thinking about it...

Possible Keg Issue - How to fix?

I was cleaning out my keg last night. I haven't used it in a few years (took a break to move and get married) but now I have a beer ready to go in. So I filled it with PBW solution and let it sit. Before going to sleep I put some pressure on it to see if the gaskets would hold. Just pretty much...

    AG Technique Question

SO I am getting ready to do my first ever AG batch. I was going to do PM, but after reading these forums I picked up a 5gal cooler and figured I'll just do a nice low gravity beer that's easy to drink first. So I'm going to do an Ordinary Bitter. Anyway, I just want to make sure I have my...

    Another fruit beer fermentation question

This weekend the wife and I are going to be brewing what is destined to be a strawberry wheat. This is her first brew ever and my first in a few years (though I've assisted a few in that time). What I seem to forget is how to know how long to leave the beer in fermentation. I think I used to do...
