    Craft beer in Chattanooga???

ATTN Chattanooga TN brewers! Hi gang, sorry this isn't really about homebrew, but is craft beer related. I am heading to Chattanooga TN tomorrow, for the weekend. Any recommendations on finding great craft beer? I have a couple breweries noted to check out, but making sure I'm not missing...

Smash beer with wine yeast? Anyone done it?

I'm thinking about brewing a Smash with Pilsner malt, Nelson Sauvin hops and using a wine yeast, probably D47, Cotes des Blanc's or Vintner's Harvest AW4. Thoughts on this?

    Belgian Candi vs Table sugar??

I'm going to brew a Ommegang Hennepin Saison and looking at the recipe, it calls for 2# light Candi sugar. Why should I use the Belgian sugar instead of 2# regular table sugar? Will there be much difference in the two? Thanks in advance

Adding flavor essence to a stout?

I'm making a Coopers Stout soon and have been thinking of adding a whiskey or bourbon essence to the secondary (1 gallon secondary). Has anyone done this type of addition before? The essence I'm considering using is "Liquor Quik" Southern Tennesee Whiskey.

Dry Hopping an IPA in the secondary, need to do anything to it?

I have a 5 gal batch of IPA that is dry hopping with an ounce of whole Amarillo hops. After fermenting in the primary for two weeks, I transfered to the secondary on top of the 1oz of whole hops (no bag, just free floating). Do I need to give the carboy a gentle swirl every couple days to make...

Belgian beers, why do I not care for them?

Ok, I have tried a few different Belgian brews and can not get over the sharp sweet bite that they have, if that is a proper description. I tried a Homebrew Triple, a New Belgian Tripple, a Delirium Tremens and a Delirium Noel and they all have that "bite" to them that I just can't get over. I...

Drinking beer with lots of hops and drug test, any concern?

Company I work for has random drug screening and I want to know if hops would show up in a drug screen? Reason I'm asking is I have been told that hops and marijuana are in the same family, with some differences. So if I drink lots of ipa's, should I be concerned if I have a random drug test...

Can bottles soak too long in Oxxy clean?

As the title says, I had some stubborn bottle labels that wouldn't come off after soaking for a day, so I left them soaking. Fast forward a couple Weeks, remembered the bottles were still soaking. Is there anything to worry about them soaking for a very long time? Thanks

Brewed a brown porter, think may have infection

I brewed a porter, fermented for 10 days and transfered to secondary. I spilt off 1 gallon into a gallon glass carboy (brand new, rinsed with hot water 3 times and sprayed with starsan). Also added 7 teaspoons of raspberry extract from a new bottle. Six hours later, there is a white/yellow thick...

Brewing a German Kolsch, extract style

Picked up an extract kit today from my local hbs. Adding 1Oz extra of Citra hops to kick up the ibu's and to add more citrus flavors. See how this turns out. This will be my 4th brew ever, hopefully it will turn out as well as the first 3 (different style brews). Will post a update in a...

Working on a Shock Top clone

My hbst didn't have a clone kit for this, but with a little research, came up with one that would be between a Blue Moon and a Shock Top. Brewed it on 4-17 and as I put it into the ferment bucket, had a gravity of 1.044 @82°. I just racked it to the secondary and had a reading of 1.014 @70°...

Stirring ferment batch? Harmful or helpful?

Just had an idea and wondered what results would occur. Brewed a batch of Summer Ale and has been in the fermentor for 7 days now and the hydrometer says it's ready for bottling, but I'm not. What would happen if I gave the batch a good stir and then let it sit for another week? Would the...

Smack pack yeast didn't pop, ok?

I just brewed a batch of Summer Ale and went to add the yeast and discovered the pack didn't pop when I tried to activate it a few hours earlier. Once I discovered this, I added the liquid and then popped the pack and poured it into the batch and gave it a good stir. Will this batch be ok...

Cooking with spent grains, anyone done this?

Well, after starting my first (real) home brew, which is a Killians red ale clone, I decided to use the spent mixed grains in the crock pot with a corned beef. Put the corned beef in the pot and laid the muslin bag with the grains on top and filled with water to the top. Been cooking since last...
