    Yeast harvested from bottles

OK, so following people's suggestions on this forum, I believe I successfully harvested some yeast from 6 bottles of Oberon. I stepped it up a couple times, eventually to a 1L starter of 1.040 wort, which the yeast ripped through. I then decanted the wort and poured the slurry (completely)...

    water volume for steeping

For steeping grains, is it ok to use a full 5.25 gallons of water? Or should i stick to a smaller volume, adding the rest for the sparge/ boil. Id heard to steep at around 1.5 gallons.

    Decanting a commercial yeast harvest

I'm trying to create a starter of harvested yeast from 6 bottles of Bell's Oberon Dregs. My only remaining question is really just how do you decant? So far, I've made the initial starter of DME, water, and dregs. Let it sit for a few days, cold crashed for 24 hours. There is a cake at the...

    Harvesting bell's yeast. primero

So my goal is to make a Bell's HopSlam clone, and in order to do that (and graduate in one sector of homebrewing), I want to harvest the Bell's strain of yeast from their Oberon Beer. I've seen in numerous places that this is the strain used for all of their ales. Basically, I'm just documenting...

    Harvesting "commercial" yeast; first time

So my goal is to make a Bell's HopSlam clone, and in order to do that (and graduate in one sector of homebrewing), I want to harvest the Bell's strain of yeast from their Oberon Beer. I've seen in numerous places that this is the strain used for all of their ales. Basically, I'm just...

    Which Temperature controller unit???/

First off, I'd like to apologize, as I'm sure SOMEWHERE, there is a thread explaining this. Also, I've spent the better part of today looking at these threads. The fact is, I am clueless when it comes to electronics, and specifically these controllers. I've already purchased a chest freezer...

    Multiple fermentation chambers?

Hey guys, So I've been looking for a fermentation chamber, and started to think. Do you brewer's who like to have a consistent pipeline, brewing every couple or few weeks, have multiple fermentation chambers? Or do you just fit multiple buckets in one chamber. I'm just under the impression...

    Turkey fryer a serious upgrade?

If I were to buy a turkey fryer, would it seriously upgrade my final product? Or is it more important to focus on securing a fermentation chamber? I see you can get them for around $60 from Home Depot. I currently just use a 26 qt pot on my stovetop. I have a wort chiller, so that would be...

    Beer turned black after gelatin?

OK, so I made a Brewer's Best Witbier, and everything was going great. Fermented down to the prescribed final gravity, smelled great, sample tasted decent after 2 weeks in the primary. Then came the black death. I racked to a secondary carboy (brand new, but I washed with Oxy clean, then...

    Extract Hop Slam Clone- critiques

Hey guys, I'm trying to gather a recipe for Bell's Hop Slam, and I've found the following 2. One main question is whether or not I can substitute for the malt? The first recipe calls for Alexander, which appears to be canned LME. Is there a different malt I can use that isn't canned...

do fermometers work on a bucket?

anyone use a strainer for wort to fermenter??

Does anyone pour there wort from the pot, through a strainer (sanitized thoroughly) and into the fermenting bucket/carboy? I did it to limit sediment, and hope for clearer beer later. Is that accurate logic? Will it hinder the flavor?

Fruit in beer, 4 gallons in 5 gallon carboy

OK, so I have 2 questions. I'm about to start the 4th week of fermentation (well, 2 primary, 1 secondary, I know its not really FERMENTATION anymore:p), and I wanted to try an experiment. The 5 gallons of Kolsch are currently in a 5 gallon carboy, and I have a spare 1 gallon glass carboy...

    Painted Bottle Caps

Has anyone ever tried painting their bottle caps to match the bottle/label? For instance maybe covering the bottle (after bottling, so the inside/sanitation wouldn't be compromised), and spray painting the beer cap?

    Cider vs. Beer (brewing diffs)

What is the difference between brewing cider and brewing beer? Do you need any extra equipment, or is it just different methods and original materials? Sorry for such a general question

    Hydrometer readings, recycle?

When taking a hydrometer reading, is it customary to dump the beer back into the bucket/carboy (providing the thief, jar, hydrometer are thoroughly sanitized, of course)? I'm just worried that if I'm taking hydrometer readings all of the time, and dumping, I'll lose too much beer.
