    Refractometer Creep?

I have just started using a refractometer. I have noticed if I set it down after taking a gravity reading, and look at it again 10 minutes later with the same sample on the glass, I have magically gained 3-5 points. Why? I figure even a boiling sample cools almost instantly since it is just a...

    Simple mash volume question

I am using my digiboil with mash pipe for the first time today. There are 2 gallons of dead space before I even get to the false bottom of the mash pipe. I assume I need to add 2 gallons to my strike water volume? I am using a pump to recirculate.

Pump use with batch sparge MLT and braid

I gifted myself a Mark 2 pump for Christmas, and it has made my brew day much simpler and safer. However, I would love some input on using it with my mash. Previous, I relied in gravity to drain the tun. Is there any drawback to pumping it out? Should I pump it slowly or empty the MLT as fast as...

Oooops- pushing the beer gods again!

Looks like I am pushing my luck with the beer gods again! I had slowed down on my beermaking recently. I had planned on making Yooper's Marzen/ Octoberfest umm.....last year some time. I had 2 bags of the grain bill for the recipe pre-ground at Austin Homebrew Supply. Well, a mouse found...

Got a new (to me) Smoker!

I have been wanting to start smoking, and real bbq-ing, and the opportunity finally came up! I got an Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn from my work. It had only been used a few times, but has been left outside a little while, so I need to knock off some rust.

    Not so discouraged anymore

I haven't been around here much lately. All the typical busy life stuff, work, kids, school. Haven't brewed much either. It hasn't just been that, though. I though I had overcarbonated SEVERAL batches of beer, and hadn't been sampling my brews much either. Seemed every time I poured a drop...

    Remember The Alamo!

Today is the anniversary of the fall of the Alamo. I will be drinking several homebrews (and possibly some whiskey) in memory of the fallen heroes who, with their lives, helped secure Texas Independence. San Antonio and the Alamo played a critical role in the Texas Revolution. In...

    Ahhh, Back to basics!

Wow, I haven't brewed for almost 5 months. Makes me sad. Between work, school, kiddos, and all the other excuses I could think of I haven't been brewing. Heck, I couldn't even motivate myself to rack my last pale ale of the yeast in the plastic carboy into glass, much less bottle it. We will...

    First wasted batch

 Great. made it to 30 batches before having to dump one. Just went to move the bucket out of the chest freezer, and the blowoff jug is empty. Blowoff tube sucked half a gallon of starsan back into the beer. Freakin' beerstarsanwater is an inch over the krausen line.

    Overcarbonation

Never had this problem before! On my last 2 beers, I pour pure foam from the bottle. Normal pop when I remove the cap, no foam-over, but as soon as I pour it in the glass, it all turns to foam. I opened a 4 month old bottle (been bottled for 4) of my imperial amber, and it did the same...
