    Straining.

    Does anyone use any type of straining material when they rack? I'm looking for something with a tight enough weave to strain out the lees. After someone else mentioned it I was thinking I might be able to make a bucket equivalent of a french press to help with cutting down on loss when racking.

    Clarifying idea

    Disaster supplies

    Not sure who else lives in the mid west but there were a TON of tornadoes touching down here. With all that going down I STILL couldn't convince my wife that my mead constituted emergency supplies.

    Hydrometer readings

    Newbie question for the experienced mazers - How do you take hydrometer readings on a 1 gallon batch? Do you pull some of the must out into a tube and then return it to the jug or just put the hydrometer into the jug and try to look through the side?
