Help with second AG and first time with corn

Bought a PBR clone kit, from Brewmasters Wearhouse, for my Mom to brew. It contains 2 ½ lbs each of 2-row & 6-row, 3 lbs flaked maize, 1 oz Willamette plus the yeast. I am assuming a 60-minute single infusion mash and have a couple questions. • What temperature for the mash? • 60 minute...

No Apparent Airlock Activity with Krausen Still on Surface

Checked batch #1 today and the krausen had dropped. The gravity is 1.010 at 56F. Racked to secondary to allow clearing as it had lots of floaters. Plan to keg it next weekend and then check batch #2.

No Apparent Airlock Activity with Krausen Still on Surface

I have two 5½ gal batches of lager that air lock activity has ceased but there is still a ¼” krausen on the surface. It is on the surface (floating) and not under suspended under the surface. I am using S-23 and it is currently 54F. So: 1) do I wait for it to drop, 2) swirl it around & see if...

How long do I ferment Saison warm?

Mine took 7 weeks to finish. SG was 1.071 and it slowed to a crawl around 1.038 - 039. The first week I had it at 88F - 90F and by week 7 was in the mid 70's. I used Wyeast 3724 and was told by Wyeast it can slow in the mid .030's if the temp isn't high enough. I am glad I waited it out as...

White stuff on surface in fermentor

Update Saturday, 01/24,09. It didn't look any worst but smelled very sour. I don't care for sour stuff so it's gone. Next batch will 1 to two weeks out. Going to do a simple APA. If it turns out well I want to do a Marzen.

White stuff on surface in fermentor

My recovery plan………….. Toss air lock with blow-off tube attached, 1 gallon plastic jug (what the blow-off tube goes to), the rubber grommet on the fermentor lid. Keep fermentor bucket, top and Thermowell stopper – wash with PBW, dry in sun light, spray with StarSan solution. Will add a...

White stuff on surface in fermentor

I was planning for this to be my first kegged beer. So, I'll keg it and keep it cold. That is if it is not sour. Thanks for the fast responses.

White stuff on surface in fermentor

StarSan everything including my hands & arms. I didn't taste it however it smells good. It is in a bucket with blow-off (soaked in StarSan for a couple hours). One thing I didn't do but will in the future is spray the outside of the bucket with StarSan.

White stuff on surface in fermentor

It’s been in primary for 3 weeks, took a reading on Saturday and it was higher than expected. I have brewed (Orfy’s OSH extract version) this once before and was expecting the same results but my fermentation temperature was 2 degrees lower. Knocked the yeast off the sides of the bucket with...

My attempt at saving some yeast.........?

Saved some yeast (WLP-001) for the first time but may have waited too long to collect it. Last batch racked / bottled and had a nice ½” layer of stuff on the bottom along with about a ¼” of beer left on top. Added 16 oz distilled water to it and swirled it around. Let the heavy stuff settle...

    Where do you get Oxygen?

I only got four 5 gallon batches out of a bottle. I had about 3" of foam from a 30 - 40 second hit. Guess I used too much.
