    IDEA: Ultimate Mash Tun

Looks like a fun project. My only concern is that it looks like you have a lot of paddles, that have a big area. Its hard to see whether they are slanted or vertical in your picture, but if they are vertical, and are as big as you have pictured, I would be a little worried that they will...

    Bottle Fillers

Aahhh I see....thats the goods!! I'll have to get hands on one of these things then!!

    Bottle Fillers

Yeah, they sound quite good. Just to clarify one thing, you push the bottle into the nozzle of the spring loaded filler, then it starts filling and it stops filling when you remove the pressure bewtween the bottle and the filler? What happens if it fills all the way to the brim? Does it...

    Bottle Fillers

I am currently making a system to do 150L batches, and as such I need to upgrade by bottling bucket and polypropylene hose with a tap to something that can bottle a batch of this size in a reasonable time frame. I have seen at a local microbrewery, they have a machine which has four nozzles...

    stainless conical fermenter

Yeah, you can do all that in the one vessel. They also come with a sampling valve that you can take samples from to test. This is not right at the bottom so you dont get any trub/yeast in it. If the lid is made correctly you can even serve beer out of it like a keg!

Diacetyl Rest - How do I execute it?

I assume in that case, that if you bottle condition it a little warmer than the primary fermenting temp, say 15 C (59 F), it will consume the diacetyl faster? I just bottled a small batch of beer last night that was in a carboy, and I hadnt tasted it. When I was done bottling, I tasted it, it...

Diacetyl Rest - How do I execute it?

Will that be a problem if I am also putting in krausen beer? Wont the yeast remove it all with the diacetyl

Diacetyl Rest - How do I execute it?

Thanks for all the info guys...but I guess I have missed the boat on this one. My bock tastes a little "buttery", its not really a bad flavour, but I know its not meant to be like that. It is a 23L (5-6 Gallon) batch, and has been in the primary for 2 weeks at 10 C (50F) then secondary for...

    FG drop after clarifying?

That is not correct, anything that is suspended and floating, even semi uniformly, in solution will have an effect. The bouyant force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced, if that fluid has other carp in it, then it will have an effect. For example, has anyone seen that mythbusters...

1st use with mini brew conical

You will only ever see anything going through the airlock if the vessel is sealed. If you a concerned about whether it is fermenting or not, smell it, look at the top of the beer, it should be a bit foamy, and you should see some scum developing on the side on the tank.

I guess that depends on how fast you are moving...

Diacetyl Rest - How do I execute it?

I have read all over this forum about diacetyl rests, and when to use them, but I cant find anywhere how to do it exactly, and none of the stuff I've read has been exactly applicable to me. I have a few questions... 1. How do you do it? I gather raising the temp a bit or something to get more...

    Fining beer

How much gelatin are you using? Do you just mix it in with the beer fermenting or lagering in the secondry and then wait? I have never used it, but I have an aweomse bock lagering at the moment, and it tastes great but is still a little murky after 2 weeks primary at 10 C (50 F) and 3 weeks...

    What volume is a 'barrel'?

You guys really need to get involved with the metric system...so simple.. We have.. 1L Then 1kL = 1cubic metre or 1000L Then 1ML = 1000 cubic metres or 1,000,000L No imperial litres, US litres and australian Litres, a litre is a litre! Also 1L of water at 25 degrees C weighs 1kg, instead of...

India Pale Ale vs. Pale Ale

That is an awesome style guide, thanks bradsul.

India Pale Ale vs. Pale Ale

I see why they are so popular.... I think I might need to get a few commerical examples into me to see what I think.

India Pale Ale vs. Pale Ale

This probably will seem like an odd question, but I see heaps of people brewing IPAs, so I want to know what the fuss, and cistinction, is all about. What are the key differences between an IPA and an regular Pale Ale?

    Scuba's Herms Build!

I am currently getting the gear together to build a HERMS system (I suppoe this stands for heat exchanging recirculating mash system?) In which case I can drop the wor system from above? I am in two minds about the hard plubing or not. I fundamentlaly think that using silicon hoses is just a...

    Altitude and the hydrometer

The altitude will not have an effect large enough for you to see. The hydrometer works by the bouyant force when it is in the liquid. The bouyant force of anything in a fliud is equal to the weight of the fliud displaced when the object is in the fluid. So when the density of the wort is...

    DIY Conical Fermenter

I think it's crap too. If there's no oxygen, or oxidisng agents, then I'll be fine. But things that have microscopic sharp edges, like an unpolished surface, can catalyse reactions, which is why I wanted a second opinion. Now that I have about six other opinions I know what to do. BTW, I...
