How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

    5 Gallons in my primary now... 22,478 + 5 ---------------- 22,483

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Ok. I checked my hydrometer in distilled water. A smidge low, maybe a point (.999). I then checked some of the leftover juice. 1.050. Now corn sugar should add about 46 points per gallon, so I should have been expecting 1.065-70 (about 18 points over the juice). Now I MUST have read my...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

New homebrewer here. I just mixed up a batch using the original recipe to the T. I think my hydrometer might be off. Can anyone tell me what your starting gravity was for the original unmodified recipe? I measured at 54 and that seems a bit low to me... Thanks! Jim

    Krausen fell early?

Thanks guys. It's tough when you read that you should see activity within 12-24 hours and mine almost looked done by that time! I do not have a thermo on the bottle itself, although now I wish I did. I know fermentation is exothermic, but I failed to take that into account. The closet I am...

    Krausen fell early?

Update: After 24 hours the krausen is completely gone. The airlock is still bubbling, but slowly (once every 30 secs or so). Should I take a gravity reading? Shake/swirl it? Or just leave it alone... Thanks, Jim

How to add an orange flavor?

I am a brand new brewer, so I don't know all the tricks, but I just brewed up a Belgian Wit. I added orange peel for the last 10 mins of the boil. I have also read that some people add it to their secondary, if you plan on using a secondary... Jim

    Krausen fell early?

I took the plunge yesterday and brewed up my first batch. I bought a kit and followed the directions (see previous post). I measured my OG and it was spot on according to BeerSmith. Transfered it to my 6.5 gallon carboy, shook it like crazy, pitched my re-hydrated starter yeast, and put it in my...

    First time brewing questions

I appreciate all the help. I was pretty sure I was over-thinking this. And BeerSmith makes that VERY easy to do. I will just brew it straight up that way if it is way wrong, I will know it was my methodology rather than me tinkering with the ingredients... @tektonjp: I will be cooling the wort...

    First time brewing questions

Hey guys/gals, I am new to brewing and I am looking for a few pointers. I have done a fair bit of reading (John Palmer s How to, Complete Joy, few message boards). I am fairly familiar with the process. I got my two stage kit and bought a recipe kit (Brewmaster's Select Belgian Witbier). I know...
