My belgian pale ale did the same thing. Prob. just the yeast strain and prob. nothing to worry about. Kevin

    Beginning my addiction

Welcome to the site. I too purchased my kit from Midwest supplies. I brewed there black dog ale, it was OK. I would suggest looking into austin homebrew for your next brew. This is the place to be. You will find a ton of new information out everyday by reading around on this site. Good...

    How not to bottle.

Did you cold crash? I don't have much experience, but I dry hopped in primary on my last batch (an IPA), just dumping the hop pellets straight into the carboy. I didn't have any problems getting the beer into the bottling bucket, but I cold crashed for about 2 to 3 days. I wonder if this...

    3rd Time's a Charm!

Thanks guys. The batch is going pretty quickly. I need a job so I can get to brewing again. I graduated in decem. with mech. engineering. Anybody know of anywhere in the southeast region thats hiring. I'm looking into part time jobs right now, such as lowes and mom and pop stores. This...

    smell of fermentation?

Not sure what is going on with your beer, however the smell usually changes a good bit with time. I prob. wouldn't worry. Kevin

    Almost a blowout

I prob. wouldn't worry about it too much for the batch you are fermenting now. Just keep an eye on it. I noticed alot of people just used a hose and attached it straight to the carboy. If you are using a bucket, you'll have to drill a bigger hole in the lid, then get a bigger grommet and...

    How do i start brewing

I bought my brewing kit from Midwest supplies and I would suggest buying an extract kit from austin homebrew. They have a ton of recipes to chose from and they do free shipping on any order over $100. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/index.php?cPath=178_452_43 Kevin

    Carbonation Experiment Under Way

subscribed. just to see what happens. I've been having carbonation consistency issues also. Kevin

    Almost a blowout

I have done the same thing as you by connecting the hose to the inside of the airlock. It's 1/2" ID so it is pretty small. It worked on my second batch, but my third batch got clogged up and blew everywhere. So basically you are taking a risk. I am going to buy a bigger blow off tube before...

    Blow off tube

If you are going to cold crash your beer then I would take the blow off tube out and replace it with the airlock due to suck back, otherwise, just leave the blow off tube in there. Kevin

    3rd Time's a Charm!

Thanks guys. I'll be honest with you, after my first two brews I was thinking of giving up brewing, just because it is alot of work for OK beer, but now that I know I can make a very good tasting beer I think I'll keep it up. Especially since this batch prob. won't last very long. Kevin

    1st Brew!!!!

Thats pretty close to the recommended OG so you should be good. I'd prob. store at mid to low 60's room temp. Also, the sierra nevada pale ale is one of my favs. Kevin

    3rd Time's a Charm!

Welp it took me 3 brews to finally make something I can say tastes awesome. My first batch was ok as was my second. My second batch was undercarbed after about 8 weeks. I just tried my third batch two nights ago after letting it sit for about 5 weeks and it was amazing. So far I've gone...

    cold crashing?

From what little I know you just put the carboy or whatever in the fridge like 3 days before bottling and let everything clear out/fall to the bottom. I had some problems with my last brew during cold crashing, just make sure that you don't have suck-back. Kevin

Blow off tube problems while cold crashing

Yep. this is my first time with this problem. I couldn't get my blow-off tube off from my airlock without breaking it, so that's why I used my blow-off tube. Def. learned a lesson and I'm gonna bye 2 airlocks next time I brew. Also gonna upgrade the ol blow off. Kevin

Blow off tube problems while cold crashing

It was probably about 10 onces of nasty water. And by nasty I mean the initial fermentation that had blown out. I just didn't have an extra airlock lying around. I am going to purchase 2 more airlocks next time I brew another batch. I had never heard of this being a problem. Kevin

Blow off tube problems while cold crashing

I went to bottle my beer the other day after cold crashing it in the fridge. I had a blowoff tube still attached rather than using an airlock. I am using a 1/2" ID tube attached to part of the airlock. When I looked in the fridge I noticed the water in the jug was about half gone and I did...

Propane/electric calculations for a class project - help?

Didn't really go through everything, but it's alot of unnecessary info. there. If you give us a question, then a solution you're wanting I might can help. Not sure if you've taken heat transfer, or how accurate you want your calculations to be to real world experiment, but there would be a ton...
