What are your "can't live without" equipment items?

A Refractometer is a good addition and invaluable from the Mash through the boil. But you will still need a hydrometer for fermentation as the refractometer isn't accurate when alcohol is in the mix.

What are your "can't live without" equipment items?

A good Mercury thermometer is needed first. Never trust a reading that you haven't backed up with a Mercury Thermometer. My last brew, my digital was off almost 10 degrees which will absolutely ruin a Mash.

So I added a gallon of tap water prior to fermentation...

When I was doing extracts as partial boils I would always boil up a couple of extra gallons the day before and chill it in a fridge overnight. Helped with the cooling this way as well.

who has a dog who likes BEER??

My dog a mini schnauzer hangs with me when I keg. If any hits the ground he is on top of it. I don't feed him any, but don't put your beer down on the ground... his tongue will be right into it.

AG'ers: Do you freeze wort for starters?

I don't know anyone who freezes, but some who can. I do neither, generally use slurries and then if it's not in my library I will do a starter with dry extract.

How many batches does your propane tank last?

We have Costco, but they don't do fills. I actually fill it at BJ's in New Castle, DE. A month ago it was 15.99.

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

My biggest issue with some of the smaller craft breweries has always been getting Oxidized beer. Many smaller guys bring in Volunteers to fill bottles and cap them in a very manual process. Many times they are not always proficient at doing so leading to skunked beer.

All Group Buy Participants - NCM Price Change

ON the wholesale side of things NCM is a bit pricy, when Michigan Brewing Co was in business they were selling sacks of Briess 2Row for around 25.00. I have even bought Cargill 20L 6-row for 20.00 for a sack at a local Brewery. It can be a WIN/WIN situation for a Small Brewery to offer bags...

How many batches does your propane tank last?

I've made a change that increases the number of batches to nearly double of what it was before. 5 years ago I switched from an electric/Oil home to Natural Gas. One item I put in was a tankless Natural gas water heater. Last fall I installed a monitor unit for it that allows me to pull...

All Group Buy Participants - NCM Price Change

As Keystone is in PA here is the PA info... Pennsylvania Title 47, Chapter 1, Article IV, § 4-492 Malt or brewed beverages may be produced by any person without a license if such malt or brewed beverages are produced not for sale and total production does not exceed two hundred gallons per...

All Group Buy Participants - NCM Price Change

Kind of funny how Keystone has removed my posts and banned me from posting on their Facebook book page. A simple post that said "Buying a pallet of grain is not an illegal act" due a posting trying to quote the 200 gallon/year.

All Group Buy Participants - NCM Price Change

In some areas of the country, smaller Brew Pubs buy Grain from their Food Service provider like Sysco. I would bet that getting an account through Sysco would be far easier than our Malting Group. I know many small local Brew Pubs who would like to be able to buy from Sysco instead of NMG as...

Exactly... unless you are brewing for a competition, experiment. It's what Hame Brewing is all about.

IPA in primary 2 weeks, Still bubbling

1.022 is not done, what temperature are you fermenting at, 63° in the basement could be a bit low? Seems to be slow so it's probably too cool. Also what yeast are you using?
