    Mr. Malty Non-Yeast Percentage

If I were to siphon a beer off a cake in a 6g carboy, break up the cake, and dump that thick slurry into a jar, does anyone know about how much non-yeast material would be in there? I didn't dry-hop, so it would only be the break material and yeast in there. I'm trying to figure out how much of...

Mash Water Calcs - Am I right?

I'm doing my first all-grain batch tomorrow using my converted 13g rectangular cooler. Do I have these infusion/sparge calcs right? Dusseldorf Altbier 5.25g OG: 1.051 Efficiency: Estimated 70% since it's my first time doing all-grain 11.3 lbs. grain bill 1.5 qt/lb Initial Grain Temp: 70F Step...

    Epoxy/Superglue to secure copper pipe?

I need to connect my copper manifold together with the fittings so that it doesn't fall apart in the MLT during the mash. I don't need a super secure, waterproof, professional joint. Can I just use superglue or regular epoxy? Are those non-toxic up to mash temps?

Converting spare 5g kettle to HLT?

I have a spare 5g SS kettle that I'd like to convert to a HLT. I'm thinking I'd drill a hole and create a bulkhead/valve to drain into my MLT. Are there any good how-to's on this? The kettle will be heated on my stovetop - a gas range - or I have a heatstick I could use if that would be better...

    Brett/Lacto Secondary Pitch Rates/Order

I have a saison that is finishing up primary fermentation (pitched Wyeast 3726 PC), and had planned to just bottle and be done with it. But I've been thinking that I might want to experiment a bit. I'd like to pitch both brett and lacto into the beer during a secondary, or at bottling, to get...

Would this be ok for all-grain?

I'm considering moving on from BiaB and start doing all-grain the usual way. Right now I have a 10g kettle for the boil, a spare 5g stainless kettle that i don't really use, and a 10g rectangular cooler. I thought about ditching the rectangular cooler and converting a 5g rubbermaid from Lowes...

    Scottish Ale alternate bittering method

I have a good friend that is getting married later this year, and I'd love to brew a wedding beer for him. He's a huge scotch whisky fan, and is partial to scottish ales as well. There's one catch - the bride has a hop allergy (lolwut?). I know Scotland has an interesting brewing past and that...

Can this insulate kettle on gas range?

http://www.mcmaster.com/#high-temperature-insulation/=hq1ngy Looking at the ultra high temperature rolls. I can't get 7g of wort to a full boil on my 14,000 BTU stove top - it gets close though. I'm wondering if insulating the kettle would get me there. Can this stuff withstand almost being...

    How to get 100 IBUs?

I'm planning a 1.100 OG barleywine and would like to hop it to around 100 IBUs w/ bittering hops. I can get a vigorous boil in my 10g kettle, so is it possible to hit that number during my boil? I get that higher gravity worts decrease the efficiency of hop saturation - are there any calculators...

    USB Microscope?

I'm thinking about getting a microscope to look at yeast with, and was hoping for something around 1000x that I could hook up to my computer and take decent res images and maybe even video. It'd also need to be something I can use to do fun experiments with with my son like scaring him into...

Can't get boil on gas stove.

I'm trying to move from brewing with friends at their apartments to brewing in my own. I borrowed a buddy's 8g aluminum (it's cheap) pot to see if I could get a 6g boil on my stovetop. The stove is gas and has always been great for cooking, but we're in a rental so it's a standard mid-low...

    Hefeweizen and Dunkelweizen same brew?

Hi - I'm new here. Haven't been brewing long either - usually joining in with a group of guys that does it regularly and watching/helping. I've been thinking about a way to brew two wheat beers at once and am wondering if this is possible: 1. End product would be a hefeweizen and a...
