    Original Gravity question

Even as I was typing that out I was thinking that the density wouldn't have changed with the loss of volume. :mug: Unfortunately we didn't take any pre-boil readings during this batch. I have had 85% efficiency in the past. I didn't notice this recipe assumed 70%...you are probably right...

    Original Gravity question

Brewed this Centennial Blonde on Sunday: Did the 11G AG version. Sparged to 12.7G & boiled down to 11G after 60 min. We lost about a 1/2G to a tubing fail during chilling so we only ended up with about 9.5G split between two carboys (I assume the rest was absorbed by the hops). We ended up...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Hmm, we sparged to a pre boil volume of 12.7G, which we brought down to 11G in 60 min. Actually lost about 1/2G when we had a tubing fail to the chiller & I guess the hops absorbed the rest.

    Brewday Timer Program

Used this program yesterday for the first time. I thought it was great. The hop addition screen is actually quite useful to view where you are in the boil and what's coming. I've been on the hunt for a multi step timer for a long time and my hunt ends now. Plus...it's free. Thanks so much Jon S...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

Brewed this yesterday. As this was our first 10G batch it may have suffered slightly from the strangeness of the new process. We ended up with a much higher OG than what is specified in the recipe (1.046 vs. 1.038) and I'm baffled to explain it. The only thing that we varied (not intentionally)...

American IPA My 2-time gold winning American IPA

Yeah, I thought it over and figured I better make the actual recipe first before I go tweaking it. Brewed Saturday and missed OG by a few points. Oh well, I'm sure it'll still be tasty. Fermentation is currently rockin' with a 2 day starter.

American IPA My 2-time gold winning American IPA

This recipe sounds great & I will be attempting it this weekend. Any thoughts on what an addition of a little honey at flameout might do? Is that too weird?

    Fresh Hop Ale Recipe Critique?

    Any thoughts on this?

    Fresh Hop Ale Recipe Critique?

I am just about to harvest my first year's crop of hops. It looks like I'll have about a pound+ of wet Cascade & maybe a 1/4 pound of Nugget. My Goldings didn't fruit at all. Do you think we could get by with just the nugget & cascades if we did the above recipe? Or should we throw in some dry...

    Fresh Hop Ale Recipe Critique?

So how did this turn out? I'm looking at harvesting my first year Cascades and I need a good fresh hop recipe. Also, any thoughts on mixing fresh & dried hops if the yield is not high enough?

    New Hop Grower

I have two solid Cascade shoots coming up now. One is a bout 6" or so and the other is a little shorter. Neither the golding or the nugget has broken ground. I tilled in a bunch of good organic compost prior to planting and sprinkled some pellet fertilizer. Dunno. . . I would have...

    New Hop Grower

I planted some cascades, goldings & nugget about a month ago. The weather has been a little wicked up until lately in Seattle (no ground freeze) so hopefully nothings wrong. Currently two shoots of cascades are coming up. I have an article from BYO Magazine that says to trim back the first few...

    Washington State Rhizome availability

Anyone get their starts yet? I am still waiting for the LHS to come through.

    Washington State Rhizome availability

Looking to start a hop garden this spring and looking for sources of rhizomes. Looks like I am limited to in-state purveyors since the hops here are quarantined. I've seen Hops Direct & plan to call the LHBS today: Cellar HB, HB Heaven & Larry's Brew Supply. Anything other sources my...

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

You're right, sorry about that. The instructions in this thread are great for anyone that wants to make one of these counterflow chillers.

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

Anyone want to contribute to the debate between a plate chiller nad a counterflow? I've heard that it's much easier to plug up a plate chiller. What are the benefits?

    Counterflow Chiller Tutorial

So has anybody used this one: Where You're The Brewer! Is the quality & operation of it comparable to the ones you guys are building? I thought I saw someone post a picture of it earlier in the thread.

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

Well that makes me feel better. Every book I've looked at has you boil the sugar and water together, then cool it down before adding it to your beer.

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

I recently bottled a Marzen and instead of boiling the bottling sugar and water together I only heated up the water so the sugar was dissolved. Hopefully this doesn't create funk in the bottles.
