    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

I started my very first JOAM (or mead for that matter) on 5/2/13. I too used lemon (and coriander seeds instead of cinnamon/clove). The first taste a couple days ago was good, but very citric! I am thinking the next time I'll try a lime.

    What are you drinking now?

First draw off my house recipe IPA. I seriously need to reevaluate my life. I've been brewing for over a year and a half now, and I've wasted my time brewing every style under the sun. I need to just man up and make the commitment to keep this beer in constant supply. :) THIS is why I brew my...

What do you dislike about summer?

In Montana, summer is too short! I've seen 2 feet of snow break all the branches off of trees in mid July. I'm concerned even right now for my garden because I don't want frost to kill the pepper plants that I started indoors over a month ago. Summer time is short lived here. That said, I've...

    flushing keg with co2

This is an awesome idea! Thank you Mogrel! To the OP, carbon dioxide should be heavier than oxygen. If you think of the CO2 almost as a liquid, then imagine "pouring" CO2 into the keg to push the lighter oxygen out. For example, visualize a bowl of punch with dry ice in it. The CO2 vapor from...

    Mistakes. Read one, leave one.

I made a blackberry extract, for using in a flavored beer recipe, by stuffing an empty Corona Extra bottle full of blackberries and topping it off with vodka. The advice I got (on HBT) for making extracts said to shake well multiple times a day for the first week or so. In hindsight, I can see...

    homebrew goes fast!

Yes, mine disappears very fast. Now if you'll excuse me, I must stop killing time and drink up before it's all gone!

Wolves in sheep's clothing (non-craft breweries)

You must not have seen "Blast by Colt 45". They couldn't even get the list of flavors right... Strawberry watermelon? The can in the picture reads, "Strawberry Lemonade". :smack: Quality speaks for itself.

What does your HBT name mean?

My HBT name is a tribute to George Thorogood & The Destroyers. I drink alone.

    Plastic fermenters and pedicoccus

You are right that I've not 100% identified the fermenters as the source for infection, as I am not working in a laboratory. That said, without the use of any hosing or transferring and still getting an infection (after two weeks in primary), the odds are stacked against the fermenters. Since...

    Joe's Ancient Orange Mead

Thank you Yooper for posting this recipe! I started my first batch yesterday. Easy peasy! (Thanks Joe!) I made some slight variations. We'll see how it turns out... 1) I used a large lemon instead of an orange. 2) I used coriander seed (1/2 tbsp. crushed) instead of cinnamon, clove, or allspice...
