It's a matter of preference. I don't think a stout would make a difference, but with a pale ale or pilsner style racking to a secondary would help clear it up. I got a second fermenter for with that in mind, but ended up just brewing another batch.

You can use tubing from Lowes to rack into the secondary. If you don't have much room, then a second fermenter makes sense.

That's great. I just checked it out and will work for me. I think I'm going to pass though and do a partial mash for my next brew.

First, I want to say thanks for your input through this thread. It is really helpful. Can you explain or point to why this is? Will the IBU be lower? Thanks again.

I think a 3 gallon pot would be fine. I just used a 4 gallon one and had plenty of room. You would have to sparge into a different (smaller) pot, but then add the run off into the 3-gallon one. As for the ratio of grist (grain) to water, this is from How to Brew (online edition): The...

How badly did I screw up: Brett question

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will definitely have a problem. The next question is how long do I have before I worry about them exploding. I guess I have about a month before I should put them in the fridge. It finished at 1.011. I used a variety of bottles that are around 12...

How badly did I screw up: Brett question

How do I figure that out? According to Hopville the recipe had a 75% efficiency. I measured 1.011 final gravity. Do I really need to spend another $20 on a bucket and bottle filler? Starsan won't get rid of it? Yes I know I'm whining. Thanks!

How badly did I screw up: Brett question

So I was bottling my first batch of beer last Sunday and 1/2 way through I dumped the dregs of an Orval into the bottling bucket. This morning I was reading that the Brett will eat through the unfermentables and will cause bottle bombs. If so, what should I do? I carbed to 2.4. I used WLP 500 as...

You can get special hop sacks at the homebrew store. I use nylon paint strainers from the paint store for hops and grains.

Any thoughts if a different yeast would work? Say White labs 500 that ferments better during the winter?
