    Simple starter overflow question

Made a 2L starter for Edinburgh Ale Yeast for a Strong Scottish Ale and it worked (really) well. Just curious since I have never had a starter go so strongly, is the tan goo from the overflow yeast or some kind of waste? This one spilled over three time like this.

Magically carbed keg of pale ale

I am not quite sure what happened, but I am really confused. Six weeks ago I brewed a pale ale. Three weeks ago I kegged it and put it in a closet under 5lbs of pressure. I let it sit in the closet longer than planned after brewing and tapping a wheat for a visiting family member. Today I...

    Kegerator and Brown Ale Shower

Purchased a 2 keg deluxe refrigerator conversion kit from Midwest Supplies and it took about an hour to install. Here's the kit: http://www.midwestsupplies.com/kegging/kegging-systems/homebrew-deluxe-2-tap-system.html I started by measuring the center points for the holes and drilling a...

    The 6 stages of brewing

Probably not original, but I saw "The 6 Stages of Project Management" as a spoof of the Kubler-Ross 5 Stages of Grief model. For brewing, at least for newbs like me, this model seemed to fit: 1. Enthusiasm - This is gonna be awesome! 2. Confusion - What temp am I supposed to start at...

Very little head with PET bottles

Made an American Brown that's been bottled for about 3 weeks, used 12 and 22 oz amber glass and some 500ml amber PET bottles. They all went thru the same sanitizing process, 1 dishwasher cycle on the sanitize option with no soap, followed by an immediate Starsan solution rinse. The glass...

    "Hey, what's this for?"

Bit of a hectic Oatmeal Stout brew day with some unplanned multi-tasking. But I got my 15 min hop addition in right on schedule, wrapped up all my final sanitation work, got the chiller set up and resanitized it... Bing, sweet it's done. Turn off heat, move pot and drop in chiller, turn on...

    Sweet Redemption

After 3 weeks in primary and 5 in bottles I'm resigned to the realization that my first baby is ugly. Its pretty harsh with bitterness and alcohol aftertaste. However, I left beer 2 in primary for 27 days, and after a week in the bottle I chilled and opened one... It is flippin awesome. I...

Need some feedback on Stout recipe

Second guessing this recipe post-purchase. I can batch Sparge about 6lbs of grain comfortably with the stove and oven. Able to hold a constant 154 for 60 min. I'm getting varying OG and IBU numbers from Brewmasters Warehouse and brewPal. What I'd like is a combo of roast and oats flavor...

Spigot on primary sprung a leak

Self inflicted pain... I brewed a pale ale last night and pitched about 9pm. Finished cleaning around 3pm today and moved my primary bucket in the closet to make some room. Bumped the spigot on the wall and it sprung a leak. Kinda rushed to clean and sanitize my bottling bucket and poured...

Cold crash in garage - bad idea?

Newb question number 2,435,551... I've been able to google my way to most answers, but not this one. I'd like to cold crash a batch that has in primary for 20 days. My garage is the only good option. Here in Charlotte area temps will bounce from 30's to high 50's each day. Is that ok for...

    Greetings from Concord, NC

Newb from the Charlotte area. Needed a new vice after tiring of online games. Narrowed it to brewing or motorcycles and let the wife pick, so here I am. 2012 Harley Night Rod wasn't in the cards. Picked up a Belgian Abbey kit from Homebrewers Outpost and that will go into bottles on...
