Good DME base recipe for testing hop flavours

I'd quite like to get an idea of the effect different hops have on the flavour/bitterness etc of beers so I was thinking of brewing a set of 1 gallon batches and using a single hop in each. I only do DME recipes but wondered whether anyone had a suggestion for a good base that would really...

    Low starting gravity

I adapted an IPA recipe but the starting gravity was predicted to be way too high so I cut back on the dme and honey to 5lbs and 0.5 lbs (instead of 6lbs and 1lbs). Ibrewmaster predicted the OG to be 1.077 (which is what I wanted) but it came out to 1.048. I'm concerned this may make a bad beer...

what effect will these changes have on my IPA?

My last batch was my first IPA and it turned out amazing (even SWMBO liked it and she doesn't like IPAs!). It was supposidly a clone of DFH 60 minute but unless the bottle I bought hadn't been stored well, it was nothing like it (not that I minded as I prefered mine). I tried to get the...

Is there anywhere in this fridge I should (or shouldn't) drill?

To avoid having to read the whole post, I want to know whether I can safely drill through the sides (or back) of the fridge shown below and also would appreciate any comments on my plans. So onto the details and photos..... I have a small GE Fridge similar to the one below that I want to...

Dry saison yeast (or best option) and any recommended recipes

I think my next brew will be a saison but I can only use dry yeast (shipping issues). Is there a dry saison yeast? Looking around it appears the answer is no and if so, would I be OK using Safbrew T-58 or is there a better option? While I'm pasting, if anyone has a great dry extract saison...

What can I do with this fridge (small GE ~3.7cuft)

I have the fridge in the image below (if I manage to attach it!). It is a small GE fridge, similar to GE TA04Y07EXSO. I did keep bottles in it but recently moved to kegging. I have a chest freezer with temperature control for fermentation chamber and am currently using it as a kegerator with...

First time kegging - any last minute tips?

I'm kegging my first beer tonight (first kegged, not first brewed). It's a DFH 60 minute clone that has been sitting in the primary for the last 5.5 weeks, dry hopping for the last 8 days and cold crashed for the last 24 hours. For carbing I intend on using higher pressure for 24 hours...

    First time kegging question

I am all ready to keg my beer for the first time (well almost ready, I've got another 5 days of dry hopping first). I intend on then cold crashing for a day based on a suggestion from the forum before racking to the keg. In order to ensure I have the process down I was thinking about kegging...

    Dirty CO2 tank

I finally got my hands on a CO2 tank yesterday and it is filled but not the cleanest (quite dusty). Is this somethign I need to worry about regarding sanitation (ie do I need to clean/sanitise the valves)?

first time dry hopping question and long iodofor time

I am going to dry hop tonight and wondered whetehr I need to put the hop pellets in a bag or whether I can just drop them into the fermentor. If I need to put them in a bag, I will need to sanitise it and rather than wasting the iodofor, can I let it sit in my keg for a week so that I can...

largest batch in a 5 gallon water cooler bottle

I usually ferment in a bucket but if I realised that there is space in my fermentation chamber to do a second batch if I ferment in a water cooler bottle. They are food grade and I have used one for a secondary but I wondered what the largest batch I could ferment without needing to worry about...

    Kegging beer without CO2

I have an IPA I am due to dry hop this weekend. The plan had been to leave the hops in for a week, cold crash for a day or two then move to my keg. This is the first time I will be kegging and having trouble getting CO2 and I'm concerned that the CO2 may not be ready when i am (it might be...

    Warming undercarbonated beer

I have a beer I chilled too soon and it's been in the fridge for a month or so. I'm wondering whether taking it out of the fridge and sitting it at room temperature for a period of time might reactivate the yeast and increase the carbonation but I'm concerned it might be detrimental to the beer...

    Forgot to add irish moss

I'm hoping it won't matter but I've just realised that I forgot to add Irish moss to my dogfish head 60 minute clone that I brewed last saturday. Should I do anything or leave it and hope for the best. I plan on leaving it in primary for 3 weeks, then dry hoping (in primary) for a week before...

    Dry hopping timing

I am sure this has been asked before but I'm being lazy (and honest!). I have a DFH 60 minute clone in my primary. Recipe is from Clone Brews (well a LHBS adaptation of it). Book says primary for 7 days then move into secondary and dry hop until fermentation complete. LHBS says dry hop...

Moving beer from bottles to keg

I have an Orval cone that I bottled a couple of months back. After a few bottle bombs I dropped the temperature as it seemed carbed enough. In retrospect, it could do with being more carbed but if I bring it out of the fridge I'm wary about getting more bottle bombs or whether it would make...

    minimum collar height?

I will be building a collar for my freezer this weekend. I only have picnic taps at the moment but intend on getting proper taps in the future. The main reason I'm building the collar is so I can keep the CO2 tank outside the freezer and run the gas line in. What is the minimum height collar...

    keezer collar insulation?

I've been using a 7cuft chest freezer with temperature controller as a fermentation chamber and beer/wine store (when not fermenting). I've just bought a kegging setup so will be building a collar soon. Living on a hot island, insulation isn't something I can lay my hands on easily. Do you...

CO2 cylinder outside keezer without a collar?

I about to move into kegging and all I need is my CO2 cylinder. The problem is I might only be able to get large ones that will be too big to fit inside the freezer. Ultimately I plan on building a collar for my freezer so keeping the cylinder outside won't be a problem but in the meantime is...

    Extending airlock

I currently brew in a fermentation chamber (temperature controlled chest freezer) where I also store my finished beer (and wine). The problem I have is condensation. I have purchased an evo dehumidifier and it works great when I'm not frementing but I am concerned that it won't cope with the...
