    Starsan Cold Crash Solution

I have read many posts where people have a good bit of starsan sucked back into the fermentor when the temp drops. I took a picture of my fermentor with just a five degree drop in temp. This morning the temp was 48 degrees and this afternoon the temp had dropped 5 degrees and the starscan was...

Small kegerator with a dorm cube fridge

Do you think this will work? I am planning to make a two-keg kegerator by making a 24 x 18 x 28 box with a 14 x 14 whole in the back where the fridge is attached to the box. I will have 2" insulation on all four sides and top and bottom. I will also have a computer fan to circulate the...

    Oxidation Question

I had noticed that I always had at least a half gallon of beer in the fermentor when the keg was full. So I purchased a stainless mini keg growler like the one below. If I take the silicon tubing that I use to fill the keg and pour directly into the growler from the ball valve it would make...

Fast and easy (and cheap) way to clean taps and lines

I have only cleaned my tap lines and taps a few times over the past two years. It takes along time to dismantle the taps and lines, it can be a pain. I kicked a keg this weekend and decided to do the right thing and clean it right away. I rinsed and then filled with hot water and a scoop of...

    Huge help with brew day

I have a direct fire single tier five gallon system. It is now a hybrid system with a hot water coil in the mash. The HLT is kept a few degrees hotter than the target mash temp with an installed 120 volt heat stick. The temp depends on the outside temp. Today it had a 3 degree differential...

    Coiled Temperature Controlled Mash Tun

I have built a coiled temperature controlled mash tun as described in the BYO article, http://byo.com/stories/issue/item/2799-build-a-heated-mash-tun-projects. Today was the third time that I have used it and it held the temps perfectly with no direct fire heat. I did use direct fire for the...

    Recirculating and Stirring

I have a direct fire system and when I mash-out I turn on the pump when I turn the burner on. I have notice that often the mash gets stuck when doing this but never when I fly sparge. I stir when mashing out but never when I sparge. Should I not stir when recirculating?

    Patio Kegerator

This was a fast and easy build. I purchased a $300 fridge from HD, a two tap system from Kegconnections, and a CO2 tank locally. It is outside on my patio.

First Crush / Irish Stout Brew Day

My wife gave me a monster mill 3 and I used it for the first time this morning on a Dry Irish Stout. Below are pictures of the crush. The gap was set at .032. I also conditioned with 3 oz of water. Efficiency was 80%.

Pacman yeast with very low final gravities.

Over the past year I have been using washed pacman yeast. I boil water, cool overnight, add to the cake, wash, etc. I am on the 3rd generation and for the past 6 months I have had low final gravities. My fermentation temps are on the high side of the range. Today was 1.005 when I racked to...

    Secondary Fermentation ????

I brewed a black rye IPA, all grain, on 12-1 with a SG of 1.077. I used pacman yeast and kept the temps around 65 degrees for the time that is was in the primary fermenter (until 12-20). Which was 19 days. Transferred to a carboy and the gravity at racking was 1.009. Now today, on January...

    High Temp Grill Paint

When I decided to try to make a brew stand I also decided to weld it myself. I bought a cheap welder from Harbor Freight and it worked fine. I knew that I could not use stainless steel because of my lack of skill and the welder. I had read some posts stating that the grill paint would burn...

First Brew on New Single Tier Build

I had my first brew on my new brew stand today. I brewed an IPA from AHS, Viking IPA (it was on sale in honor of IPA day!). Everything went pretty good, other than a propane tank running out of gas while I was heating the HLT. I also blew a hose off of the water-in on the wort chiller...

Brutus Build - First time to weld

Thanks to SouthernYankee for giving me the confidence and information to start this project. I used his plans but changed them to fit my 10 gallon pots. If it were not for hbt, there is no way I could have built my kezzer or this brew stand (not complete yet!). I purchased a 90 amp flux core...

    Forgot to vorlauf

I forgot to vorlauf today. I mashed out at 170 degrees and recirculated by drawing of wort into a quart measuring cup. I did this until the temp reached 170 but I stirred the grains to even the temp. Will not vorlaufing have a negative effect? Thanks for any help.

    First All Grain

I brewed my first all grain today. It was great! It was an AHS Red IPA with Pacman yeast, 11.5 lbs of grain and a target SG of 1.059. I raised my strike water to 170 hoping the grain would bring it down to 154 but it only brought it to 160 so I added a couple of cold bottles of water and...

    All Grain 5 gallon equipment

I have been extract/partial mash brewing for about one and a half years, and I am ready to move to all grain. I am sure that I will only brew five gallon batches. 90% of of my brews have been below 1.070 SG and only a couple over 1.090. I have used Bobby M's Mash Turn chart and I am sure that...

First Partial Mash with Low Gravity

I just brewed my first mini mash from Austin HB. This is 20 something brew. It is the Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout. The target SG is 1.060 and my SG was 1.056. I think my problem was with the size of my colander and the fact that I used a grain bag. The directions said to use 1 qt per...
