What to do with a sour beer?

A couple of months ago, we had our first infected batch. Bottled it up anyhow to see how it would turn out. It is fairly sour, kind of like if you'd mix cider vinegar with beer. Looking for cooking ideas to use this stuff up. Figured it could be used in a marinade, for making BBQ sauce...

    just scored some free carboys

just got 3 7.5 gallon carboys. they have a threaded neck and plastic caps. just need some rubber stoppers and time to ramp up production. have only used bucket for fermenting, but guess these are big enough for primary or seconadaries. I can tell you, these things full to the top are HEAVY!

    Irish Moss whirlfloc question

If you dump everything from the boil into the fermentor, are you defeating the purpose of the irish moss or whirlfloc, or does it help things settle out in the fermentor? Tried using a straining funnel a few times and it just clogged up, so now just dump everything into the feremntor. Am I...

    Aging commercial winter ales?

Been finding some great deals on winter ales since they are out of season. For example Pyramids Snow cap. Will these be OK if I keep until next winter or am I better drinking them "out of season" so to speak. Rather drink a winter ale in spring than wait and find out I have a case of nasty...

    Pellet hops question

I've always thrown the pellets directly in the boil. Recently switched from extract to BIAB. Have 2 paint strainer bags. If I use a bag with the pellets, will it keep them contained, or will the disolved pellets just go through the bag? Secondly, does it even make a difference in taste if the...

Corona Mill or Pasta Maker Mill

Have read the seemingly endless threads (ugly corona mill and Using a pasta maker to mill grain) and trying to decide which way to go. I think I’m leaning toward the Corona at this point. Does anyone have experience with both and which do you prefer and why? Also, other than on-line...

    First BIAB attempt

After brewing nine extract batches, took the leap to BIAB, after reading all about it on HBT. It’s an Irish Blonde ale. We were already using a turkey fryer set up, so the only thing we needed to buy was the bag. Got the large paint strainer bag (2 for $5 at Home Depot). Couple of issues...

2 row - Briess or Malteurop

Getting ready to try BIAB. Have done only extract kits to date. After trying a batch or two, want to look into buying ingredients in bulk. My options for a 50 pound sack at LHBS’s for 2 row are Malteurop or Breiss. Both within a couple bucks on price. Does anyone who has used both have an...

How big of a hole do I need to drill in a plastic bucket lid to install the standard rubber grommet an airlock goes into?

    BIAB mashing question

Want to start BIAB soon. Think I have the basic process down from reading various threads, but have a question on mashing. What is the difference, if any, between heating water to desired strike temp, then adding grains vs. adding grains to cold waterand then bringing up water temp to desired...

    brew recipe builder type site??

There is a site called cocktailbuilder.com cocktail builder - mixed drinks from ingredients in your bar where you list what ingredients you have on hand and it brings back cocktail recipes you can make with them. Does anyone know of a similar site for brewing, so if you had some odds and ends of...

Northern Brewer - Coupon code? Website issues

Does anyone have a current coupon code for Northern Brewer? Getting ready to place an order, so thought I'd check. Also, thier web site seems a bit squirrely today. Sometimes it opens and other times I get a "page can't be displayed error". Other sites seem fine, so don't think it's my computer.

    Big Ol' Pumpkin Head

A friend and I brewed a 5 gallon extract porter kit and on bottling, we decided to make half a pumpkin porter. Bottled half and then boiled 2 teaspoons of dry pumpkin spice in about a cup of water, added that to the remaining 2.5 gallons, mixed gently and bottled. Pumpkin flavor is there but...

    spent grain dog treats

I've seen several threads on making dog treats and bread from spent grains. I'm just doing extracts with steeping grains. Can the steeping grains be used for this, or just mash grains from all grain brews? My dog wouldn't be picky, but just wondering. Also for those of you that have done the...

Barleywine - Double pitch dry or pitch on cake

Hey all. Noob here. Currently have a porter in primary fermentor that has been in about 3 weeks, and will be bottling soon. It was a kit and came with Coopers ale yeast. Ordered the American Barleywine kit form AHS without yeast. Which do you think would be a better option for the barleywine...

    pumpkin spice at bottling?

Wanting to try a pumpkin brew, but don't know if I want to do a full 5 gallons. Was thinking about brewing a 5 gallon batch (probably the Alaskan Amber clone from AHS), and splitting the batch at bottling time, putting some pumkin spice in half the batch. Split the priming sugar in half and...
