Any good bottle shops in SE Idaho?

I was wondering if there are any good bottle shops in Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Pocatello or surrounding areas? Even though UT liquor stores have gotten way better in the past few years, my beer enthusiast friends and I have tried just about every bottle locally available. I was thinking of...

    which yeast for wee heavy?

I am putting together my first AG wee-heavy (strong Scottish ale) and I'm torn on which yeast to use. I have on hand S-04, Nottingham and WLP001, (as well as WLP080, WLP029, WLP036 and GY-054 but they're not really up for consideration, unless someone wants to convince me otherwise). I've never...

What is your technique for caramelizing wort?

I am planning a wee heavy for this weekend and want to use the new-to-me technique of caramelizing some wort. I have read some suggestions to boil a few quarts/liters down to a syrup, or boil a couple of gallons of first runnings for 5 to 15 minutes before adding back to the main kettle, or...

Using yeastman qc report to determine viability??

I have a vial of WLP036 with best before date of 7/31/15. I've always understood that production dates are 4 months prior to the best before date, making it 3/31 in my case. When I enter it into yeastcaluculator.com it gives me a viability of 57% as of today. So I've never looked up my vials...

HBT gets a mention in Wired Magazine Apr 2015

I was just reading my copy of Wired Magazine from April 2015 and there is an article on culturing local bacteria and yeast for brewing. (For those who have never read it, Wired is not a brewing magazine, but a magazine on how technology affects science, design, politics, entertainment, pop...

    testicle poop beer

The article is about all kinds of weird beer, but the one that stands out is an Icelandic beer brewed with testicles and poop. https://fortune.com/2015/04/25/weirdest-craft-beers/

Any recommended substitutions for hop oil?

I found a recipe I'd like to try that calls for two drops of hop oil (specifically Styrian Goldings hop oil) diluted in a bit of grain alcohol to be added to secondary. I am not interested in using hop oil, but was wondering if any one knows what a recommended substitution would be. Should I dry...

    Micromatic regulator knob mod?

I just scored a micromatic co2 regulator and half full 5# tank from a cl find. The regulator is they type that needs a screwdriver for adjustment. Is there any reason why I should not just jb weld a large fender washer in the slot so I can turn by hand?

Is the crush my problem w efficiency? (PICS)

I just brewed my 11th all grain batch. I have have really dialed in the procedure and technique on my rig, and my equipment profile in BS has been very accurately measured. However, my efficiency seems to always be low, and I suspect my crush. Sure enough, it was low again today. I usually buy...

    Question on Jamil's Trigo Oscuro + WLP300

I just just picked up the ingredients for Jamil's Trigo Oscuro Dunkelweizen from Brewing Classic Styles. Has anyone brewed this? A Google search of these forums didn't turn up anything. My question is on ferm temps. Jamil recommends WLP300 or 3068. I went with WLP300. The book says to...

Decoction vs Infusion for step mash in cooler?

I want to brew up a Witbeir that calls for a step at 122° and another at 154° (recipe HERE). I have a cooler for MLT. I've never done a step mash before, always just a single infusion, batch sparge (I built my rig to be able to fly sparge, although I haven't done that yet either). I've used...

Is Northern Brewer making fun of Budweiser?

So during the Superbowl yesterday, I'm sure most of you saw this Budweiser ad. http://youtu.be/siHU_9ec94c Even though I haven't had a Bud in the better part of a decade, I did enjoy the commercial very much. And I am certainly one of the people they are poking fun at. Then today I get this...

What is the oldest homebrew you've drank?

In my basement I have probably 75 cases of empty bottles. A few months ago I started organizing my gear to create a dedicated "beer area" in my basement, since my gear has grown from switching to all grain last summer. I was cleaning out any bottles and other old equipment that will never...

    Sewer Water Beer

I just read this article on NPR. An Oregon homebrew club plans to make beer from treated waste water. Would you drink that "****"? http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2015/01/28/381920192/why-dump-treated-wastewater-when-you-could-make-beer-with-it

    Norther Brewer specials (frustration)

I've been waiting for NB to put out a sale on their plastic Big Mouth Bubblers. I figured one would be coming this holiday season. Well, today I get an email that they are doing a FREE BMB if you buy two kits. Only problem is all of NB's specials include extract kits! Why oh why won't NB do...

Dumping undercarbed / no carb bottles in keg

I did a double batch of CYBI dead guy clone. Half the batch got wlp001 and half got wlp090. All have been bottled 6-7 weeks. The 001 are fantastic. The 090 floccd early I guess, and after 6 week they're barely carbed. Since bottling that batch, I have come into an old fridge from my neighbors...
