Pushed the limits with Crystal additions

    Here's the recipe I brewed: 8lbs 2-row, 47% 4lbs Crystal 40L, 24% 3lbs Munich Malt, 18% 1lb Carapils, 6% 1lb Flaked Rye, 6% S05 yeast 1 oz Amarillo - 60min 1oz Amarillo - 30min 1oz Amarillo - 5 min Yes, I severely pushed the envelope by using 30% crystal malts in my beer. I...

    My ESB taste like soap

So I brewed my ESB for a local homebrew crawl and for some reason it came out absolutely repulsive this time. The only difference from my normal recipe is that I used all leaf hops as the LHBS was out of kent golding pellets. I brewed a Stout that same day that turned out great and everything...

1st AG Batch.. ? on boil volume

I'll be using the brew kettle/pot that came with the turkey fryer. It holds about 6.5 gallons if filled to the lip. I've used this kettle several times for extract brews but this will be the first time I've used it for an AG brew. For extract, I've usually boiled about 4.5 - 5 gallons to...

Re-hydrated yeast w/ room temp water...

So I just brewed a Lemon Summer Rye ale using extract and steeping grains and just realized a made a little mistake... I pitched the yeast after 15 minutes of rehydrating in water that was probably around 65 degrees or so. I used DRY-97 American West Coast yeast. Following the instructions...

connecting beer line to ball lock, HELP!

It appears I'm missing something here. I figured I would just clamp the beer line in similar to what I did with the Co2 line..but the tower I ordered already has this affixed to the end of the line. Pigskin Pale Ale that desperately wants out of the keg and into my mouth..but of...

    FG reading not low enough..

So my buddy and I brewed two extract kits about 20 days ago, a Tripel and an IPA. Both of which were packaged at one of our LHBS. Both beers have been in primary for 20 days. Here are the quick details: Tripel SG came in at 1.085, pitched 2 packs of Wyeast 3787 at 81 degrees IPA SG came...

    Bucket top about to burst!!!

Brewed a Tripel yesterday, came in at 1.084 OG. Used two smack packs of Wyeast (can't remember which kind, notes aren't in front of me at the moment). Just checked the bucket and the airlock is full of the beer, and the lid is bulging and could blow at any minute. This is the highest...

Easiest labels to remove (New Belgium gets my vote!)

In my experience of reusing commercial bottles I've come to the conclusion that New Belgium bottles are by far the easiest of all the bottles to scrub clean. The label peels right off when soaked and the glue is nothing for a sponge to quickly handle. Plus, they don't have a label on the neck...

Just had my first bottle bomb!!!!!

My fiance and I were just getting ready to relax and enjoy our Sunday evening when we heard a loud explosion. My first reaction was, damn that cat..what did he knock over this time? We ran into the living area (we have a 1 bedroom condo...not much room) and immediately noticed the beer pouring...

Cat knocked off air lock on secondary

When I got home from work yesterday I noticed the airlock on my secondary for a SNPA clone was tipping to the side. On closer inspection, the bung had raised enough out of the carboy to allow air to seep in, and the airlock wasn't connected to the bung. The only explanation is the cat...

    Fresh Coriander From Garden...

Anyone used coriander from your cilantro plants? I'm new to gardening and brewing (both have become obsessive hobbies :rockin:) and was curious if I could yield some quality coriander seeds for a belgian wit this summer, while also enjoying some fresh cilantro in my homemade salsa :ban: May...

Okay to bottle directly from spigot?

I've only brewed three batches and this is the only way I've done it, never used a bottling wand. Same goes for wine, and it's always turned out fine. Although...I recently read where someone mentioned bottling directly from the spigot isn't a good thing. Is this true? If so, can someone...

    Fear of Oxidation

I currently have my second ever batch (both 1st and 2nd were IPAs) bottle conditioning. I bottled last Saturday (5 days ago) so I'm still impatiently waiting to see if everything turned out okay. (11 days primary, 11 days secondary w/ dry hop, 5 days and counting in bottle). So here's the...
