    Spalt for Dry Hopping

Has anyone ever used Spalt to dry hop? I have a lot of Spalt (leaf, not pellets) and I have just kegged a pale ale that doesn't have quite enough aroma. Would it be a good idea to put in about 1 oz of spalt in the keg?

    FermCapS and Yeast

Does anyone use FermCap to prevent too much foaming while doing a starter? If so, when do you add it? When boiling the starter wort or afterwards? I had to add some after it had started and I am worried about contamination. Should I be worried about this? Other FermCap questions...

Did anyone here enter last year? Are participants supposed to get score sheets or anything in the mail? What about if you place in a category, do you get a medal or something?

Out of CO2 on a weekend

It's Sunday and I just kegged a batch and found out that I am out of CO2. I can't purge the keg of oxygen until I get more CO2 which won't be until tomorrow. So I'll be purging it tomorrow night. Is that too long to wait? Will my beer get oxidized in 36 hours? I also need to check for a leak...

    Wyeast 1272 attenuation issues

OK, I brewed a Fat Tire clone (recipe from Brew Your Own), all grain, 5 gallons, using this yeast. I brewed it about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the gravity I just measured is at 1.020. I adjusted the recipe with BeerSmith because my efficiency hasn't been very good (this is only my 3rd all grain...

Did I kill my yeast with StarSan?

I was making an 1 L starter and had about 100ml of StarSan in the container, and I forgot to dump it before I added the wort with the yeast in it. I'm thinking that I killed the yeast. It was a pack of dry safelager yeast mixed in with 1L of water with 100 g of DML. I measured the pH after I...

    Overcarbed then Undercarbed

OK, so I over-carbonated a whole batch of Bock (used about 8 oz of corn sugar for a 5 gal batch). Ended up with gushers. Luckily, I had bottled them into Grolsh bottles, so I "burped" them several times to release the pressure and bring the carbonation down. Unfortunately, I overdid that and now...

    Malt differences

I have been trying to understand the differences in malts and I'm not sure that I know exactly what they are. I know that there are differences in how they are malted, i.e. temperature, times, etc. etc. and that there are differences in types of barley, i.e. 2-row and 6-row. But are there also...

    Blonde Ale Question

I have made the following Blonde Ale several times and it has always turned out as a great quaffable beer. I recently harvested some Wyeast 2565 Kolsh yeast that I used for an Oktoberfest type ale. Any opinions as to whether this Kolsh yeast would be a good substitute for what I have been...

    Semi-washed yeast

I "washed" yeast from an Oktoberfest style ale that I recently made using the method from the Yeast Washing Illustrated post. This being my first time at trying this, I obviously I did not do a very good job because I only have what appears to be a very small amount of yeast in each 8 oz jar...

    Splitting the Brewing Process

Has anyone ever split the brewing process? I would like to steep the grains, sparge them, and then store the wort to boil later. This way I don't have to spend a straight 5 to 6 hours brewing, I can do it in a couple of 3 hour evenings. Does anyone do this? Would this be a bad idea? I would...

    Coriander Use

I made a wheat beer this weekend and I have a question regarding the coriander that I added. I did not remove the coriander (nor the orange zest that I also added) after I boiled the wort and it is now fermenting. I used 3/4 oz. of powdered coriander. Should I have filtered it out before...

    Drying Long Hoses

How do you dry a 12' or longer hose? It is the beer line for my keggerator. I cleaned it and sanitized it and will not be hooked to the kegerator for a few weeks and would like to make sure that it is dry. How does one do that?

    BrewSmith Fermentables Questions

I believe that BrewSmith provides a % weight of the ingredients for a particular recipe. Is there a way that one can see what the contribution of each ingredient to the fermentable totals is? In other words, 2lbs of DME will contribute to the OG more than 2lbs of grain, but they show up as the...
