Original gravity loss due to whole hop absorbtion??

Brewed an IIPA last night and we originally set out to have a big beer with an OG of 1.084. We used 11 ounces of mostly whole hops. After cooling and aerating we used about a gallon of top off water to land at 5 gallons and took an OG reading and it was about a 1.071. I can't figure out why we...

The Single Tier Brewstand Build Just Got Easier

I was just getting ramped up to start building a brutus single tier brew stand so I can go all grain and was about to get steel ordered and get rolling on the project and literally 2 days ago my father in law had acquired an old hydraulic pump testing table. He said he really didn't have much...

    Priming sugar??

I Am bottling my IIPA tonight and see all sorts of different sugars you can use for priming. I could not find corn sugar at the grocery store so bought corn syrup. Now I see it has vanilla added. Do you think I should use regular table sugar instead or will the corn syrup be better? Thanks!

    My Imperial IPA Recipe....Thoughts??

So I am making a Double IPA this weekend and thought I would bounce the recipe off of a couple HBT'ers. 1.5 lbs of Crystal/Caramel 10L Steeped for 30 min at 150 8 lbs of Pale LME 1.650 lbs of Wheat DME Since I love the flavor/aroma of Amarillo and Cascade, my hops are as follows...

    I got a free tank...Fermenter??

I recently acquired this stainless tank and thought maybe I could use it as a fermenter. I would bet it to be somewhere around 30-40 gallon capacity. All I could find on it was that it was a "Trim Squirt Accumulator". From what I can find on the web, a trim squirt accumulator was used in the...

    First year hops update

These are my first year hops. I planted two cascades and two hallertau hop rhizomes in late may. I live in central MN and am quite happy with the yield given the fact that I wasn't expecting much from what i've read on here regarding first year hops! I am brewing a blue moon type clone...

    Priming with Brown Sugar

Hello Brewers... Just a quick question about priming. I have 10 gallons of beer that is ready to be bottled. I built these recipes rather than buying a kit in which comes with Priming sugar etc. One is an English Mild and the other is along the lines of a Blue Moon except I up'd the ABV...

    Oops...

So I decided to brew two different recipes at the same time so I would make twice as much beer with essentially one mess. Well with one batch i wanted to add crushed coriander seed and lemon peel and when I got down to the 5-10 min left of the boil I was adding all the flavoring/aroma hops to...

    Atwood Speakeasy Summer Ale

So I wanted to come up with a summer ale that is nice and easy to drink as well as very refreshing on hot summer days. I have made a pretty phenomenal Blue Moon clone that turned out great but I wanted to tweek the recipe a bit but keep it along the same lines as the Blue Moon Clone recipe. I...

    Hops are in...

I know I am a little late in getting these in the ground but we had some frost advisory's the last couple days in MN and it is still May so I should be ok....right?? I was finally able to carve out enough time last night to get them in the ground. I planted 2 rhizomes of Cascade and 2 rhizomes...

    Rubber Stoppers for Airlocks

So I have a glass carboy that came with one of these rubber stoppers that the airlock slides into. My issue is this, after I get the carboy all sanitized and the beer racked over, I have the hardest time getting the stopper to hold in the carboy. Especially if i've dry hopped and I get some of...

    A Light Lager

Hello Homebrew World! I am posting today in hopes I can come up with a recipe to use up 5 lbs of Muntons Extra Light DME. I had originally bought these to build a blue moon clone but changed my mind on the recipe after I found a more accurate one. So I was hoping that someone would have a...

    First Time Force Carbonating

I have just kegged a Moose Drool clone (Caribou Slobber) and I have always bottled my homebrew with good results. I have never kegged before but recently came across a couple vacant corny's to use. My question is getting these carb'd. I have read numerous threads regarding this and am a bit...
