    St. Patricks Day 2013

OK, I'm planning early for a change. I was excited to see it falls on a weekend this year so I thought I might throw a party. I'm thinking of brewing three beers, a Dry/Oatmeal Stout, a Irish Red, and the third is up in the air. I wanted to brew something I could dye green. But I can't do...

Problem with naturally carbing a keg...

I made up 10 gallons of Dunkelwiezen. The plan was to keg 5 and bottle 5. all went well and I had most of the bottles filled when SWMBO informed me that I was out of caps!! SO I had already added 4 oz. of priming sugar to the bottling bucket. I poured the remaining bottles back in the bucket...

New to everything, harvest, crush, fermet...

Ok, so i've read a bit, and it has lead to a ton of questions, but I'll just ask a few... long time beer brewer, first time (hopefully) wine maker. I have some grapes growing on my back fence, from the nieghbors. they are small, green variety of grape. they have been sour, but recently have...

seriously I made a 5 gallon batch of witbier, never have a problem with it before, at the end of the boil, i racked to my carboy to find only 2.5 gallons!! wtf?! I looked over my water additions to the mash plus sparge was 7 gallons which should have left me with plenty after draining...

Which category does this beer get entered in

Quick one guys, my Russian imperial stout has oak, port wine, and cacao nibs. Does that mean I have to enter wood aged category, or can I enter ris. Also is wood aged category REALLY hard to do well?

How much beer should I have at my wedding reception?

I have a weird question, but figure you guys must be experts in the subject. We are having our wedding reception for about 120 guests. My friends and I drink a lot of craft beers. There are a lot of people in our family though that are BMC drinkers. And quite a few winos. We are having about 36...

RIS barrel aged... bourbon or wine

I have a recipe that came out good. I think I wrote the recipe my self, and it's great. I was thinking of aging it on a bourbon barrel or a wine barrel. I might have a connection on the bourbon barrel, and might want to buy the wine barrel for around 60$ i think. My concern it that they...

I feel like I failed A Russian Imperial Stout

Ok, so this was my first massive grain bill, that was targeted to hit 1.100 @ 75% efficiency. So it took 20lbs. of grain, and I used 1 lb. rice hulls. I don't think it is wise to do that in a 5g cooler mash tun. Couldn't stir the mash at all, bent my plastic spoon/paddle, then the sparge...

Trying to track down a odd flavor

I've picked up this odd flavour in a extract pale ale, partial mash IPA, and AG American Red Ale. Not in my stouts though. I thought it was bad hops, but each beer uses different kind of hops. It's kind of bitter, cardboardy and bready too. In the Red ale it's esspacially like a yeasty...

The beer that wasn't to be?

It started when I printed off a recipe from beer smith. Took it to the LHBS and the guy there handed me four pounds of grain for a Irish REd... umm... So beer smith just put down 1 pound of each of the ingredients, not the actual wieght, never had that happen before. So I just got 9 more...
