Non Traditional Grain (cattle feed) - Experiment for kicks

Anyone ever tried using non-medicated cattle feed? This isn't anything serious, but I was wondering what might happen and how it would taste. We get the stuff cheaper than dirt, and I wonder if it would even be drinkable. anyone ever try this, any reason not to try this?

Say hello to my new AG brewhouse

The materials are all bought, the bench itself is already built, the only thing I don't have yet are my quick disconnect connections and electrical supplies for the pump. What you see is my current configuration. I still have to install all the valves on the hlt and kettle. But anyways. I...

Newb Problems - Don't drink too many home brews on brew day

I really need to stop getting bombed on brew day. I had my first all grain batch yesterday. i started off with something simple to learn the ropes AHS Texas Blonde. First off, I started drinking when I started setting up at noon. Well that's not good when your brew day ends up taking until...

    My starter doesn't look right

So i'm doing a blonde and i'm using White Labs German Ale/Kolsch 029. Yesterday morning I pitched into a 1 liter starter that had 4 ounces of extra pale dme and 1/8tsp fermax previously boiled and cooled. This is the first starter that never gave me any kind of its own krausen. I know its...

So I brewed this beer over 4 weeks ago, 4 weeks and 1 day ago. This was my second batch of beer. My first batch a belgian whit has no problem with carbonation (actually overly carbed), but this one is almost flat. I used 4.5 ounces of corn/priming sugar when I bottled. There is enough...

Yeast Pitch Rate Calc Help - 1.093, 2 vials

I will soon be brewing my first big 1.092-3 beer. Jamil's MrMalty says that If I want to use 2 vials I need a 2.5-3 liter starter. Does that mean that I just need to pitch both vials in on 2.5 liter's of 1.040 wort? If so, I have a 1000ml and a 2000ml flask. Can I pitch the yeast into...

New AG'r - No Sparge Guidance pls

So I'm looking at breaking out into AG and No Sparge seems to be the simplest way to get into it, and by some accounts produces better wort in some instances. I don't really care if i have to buy a few extra lbs of grain, as its a small price to pay for simplicity. I just want good beer. So...

Boil losses - Way more than I expected

So after several full boils that ended up in adding water to the fermenter I decided to do a full mock boil tonight and see just where I am. I did a mock minimash for 45 minutes at 155, then brought to a boil, simulated adding extract time, brought back to a boil and boiled for an hour. I...

Fast Clean Fermentation - I guess that's good?

So I did an Irish Red on Sunday. Og was 1.055. So today is really the 4th full day of fermentation, but the bubbles have stopped (i know that doesn't mean its really done). I popped the bucket open to take a gravity reading and low and behold there was no Krausen. I probably could have...

    Will my carbonation increase anymore?

So I made my first beer and this is week 3. Its a minimash AHS Belgian Whit kit. It spent one week in primary, one week in secondary and today is the 6th day in the bottle. When I poured it the head went away very quickly. The color is a hazy straw yellow, but not nearly as hazy as I...

My first beer. Pretty good and not even carbed yet

So here it is, one day prior to bottling. Light aroma of orange and spices, light on the palate with a soft mouth feel. I can't wait to see what its like in a few weeks carbed and matured a bit.

    Wow Stinky Fermentation?

My first batch was an AHS Belgian Whit and the entire time during fermentation the smell was always pleasant. Last night I brewed an AHS Dos Equis clone minimash. Tonight my laundry room is quite smelly. I'm certain its not the Whit that's in secondary in the same room. The XX clone is...

My dog eats hops and she love it!

What a crazy mutt. So last night I was brewing my second batch of beer, first batch is in secondary now. Well I was a little tipsy by the end and I needed to toss in some hops at knock out. Well, I tripped and dropped my little dish just catching it before it hit the ground. a handful of hop...

    First batch is bubbling away!

So my first batch is in the fermentor and bubbling away already! I did the AHS Belgian Whit, mini-mash, alcohol boost, and yeast fuel. I made a yeast starter a couple of days ago that I pulled out of the fridge this morning, decanted off the wort/beer. I obviously had increased my yeast...

    Yeast Starter Question

I'm about to pop my cherry on my first batches of brew. I've assisted a friend through the process a few times in the past, so I have a very basic knowledge of what I'm supposed to be doing. I've read How to Brew cover to cover and watched several of the great videos here to refresh my memory...
