San Jose for the next 24 hours

Hey all, I'm in San Jose for the VON conference, just wondering if there's a brewery here that I MUST try while I have the chance. Also, I'm about 2 blocks from the Firehouse grill & brewery, is that worth checking out? (roughly on washington & sunnyvale in sunnyvale). Thanks, -Aaron

    Witbier recipe guides?

Hi, I've been wanting to put together a witbier, and my invaluable reference - Designing Great Beers - seems to be of little help. Other than looking at clone recipes etc, does anyone know of any good resources to find out what makes for a truly great witbier?

Temperature correction for M/L tun cooler?

Hey, just wondering what kind of numbers you guys have to correct for for the amount of heat that gets sucked out of the mash by the cooler itself. If you preheat the cooler, do you use boiling water or no, and either way, how much and how long?

How to keep a yeast strain/make starters on the cheap?

I'm curious what you all out there do for keeping yeast strains and making starters. (For those of you that elect not to buy yeast each and every time.) Do you keep some in the fridge? If so, just a little, or a whole 2 Qt starter? I'm thinking of making a simple pale ale and canning it...

    Stupid AG question

Ok, I have a question after taking some measurements after moving my wort from the primary to secondary, as my FG is seemingly way too low. I made a 5.5 gallon batch with 10 lb 2row 1lb biscuit malt 1lb rye malt 1lb carapils I was/am making an IPA, and my SG came out to 1.079, showing...

    Propane burner efficiency?

Hello, I'm curious if any of you have the same burner as I, and if so, how many hours of brewing you get out of a 20# tank. Mine is the same as the King Kooker at http://www.northernbrewer.com/burners.html , just with a different frame. I'm GASing pretty bad, because after dumping about...

DIY Mash/Lauter tun & wort chiller

Hey, Just letting anyone watching the previous thread know that I got an 80.0 efficiency, after a minor boilover, and including an excessive evaporation rate (55k BTU propane unit) that should have been at 27.7%/hr. I'll have to tune closer next time, but just saying that a $100...

DIY Mash/Lauter tun & wort chiller

Hey all, This week I've been looking at what it'll take to go AG from extract, and I made my mash/lauter tun and wort chiller (I'd been getting by by doing condensed wort boils and chilling in an ice bath in the sink). I've taken pictures, and totalled up what it all cost me, not too much...

Extract w/ Rye & Biscuit Malts?

Hello, I'm looking at doing the IPA recipe in the Dec 06 Brew Your Own magazine, and it calls for Rye & Biscuit malts to be used, even in the extract recipe. As I understood from reading, you'd need the enzymes from the barley to turn these into sugars for the yeast. Am I off here? Do they...
