    Missing gravity

Inconsistently missing my gravity by 10 points. I've checked all the obvious things. Calibrated my hydrometer, checked temps , measured accurately. I did a double IPA today and my OG was 1.066 and it was supposed to be 1.078. I use a barley crusher and have a fairly tight crush. Any advice...

    Mash in my EYE!

Thought I'd share this after my brew day today. So I was having a good day and brewing with some tunes on. All was going well until I cleaned out the mash tun. So I had a smaller bucket that I was scooping the spent grains into and once I finished doing this I picked up the smaller bucket to...

Any ideas what these things are eating my hops?

They seem to eat a leaf pretty quickly. So far I've just been taking them off when I say them.

    Trim or not?

So I have some cascade hops growing. Its their first year but they were not from a small rhizome a friend actually dug up and gave me a whole plant. I know most people don't cut them back in year one but I feel like mine needs it. It's now 5 feet tall, has 5 or so solid bines climbing the...

    Leaving water in stainless

Am I ok to measure my water out into my stainless hot liquor tank the night before I brew? Then I can just get up and go in the morning. Any reasons I should not do this? Thanks

    Nitro Lovin

So I hooked up my new stout faucet last night and my beergas with regulator and poured my first ever nitro beer at home. The beer is a guinness clone that I brewed so a fairly typical dry irish stout. The beer came out with a moderate amount of head but no cascading effect. I had the stout on...

    Quick disconnects not sealing

This is the first time this has happened. When I connect my gas line to my ball lock keg after its clicked into place the co2 continues to leak out. Also it seems the beer is also leaking occasionally on one of them as well. Not sure why this started happening out of the blue. I have 2 kegs...

    Detroit Advice

Calling all you Detroit locals. Just wanted some pointers. I am going to Detroit this weekend for a sports weekend. Will be seeing the Wings on Sat night then the Lions on Sunday. We are staying downtown (myself and 3 friends). Just wanted to know if anyone could recommend some good...

How much wort to leave behind?

So just got my spigots installed in my kegs and am ready to do my first batch with this new set up tomorrow. Last night I was calibrating the volume of the keg and using a piece of wood to measure a gallon at a time for both my MLT and my BK. So my question is this. In my boil kettle when I...

    Blow off question on corny

I am doing a primary fermentation in a corny and am using a blow off due to the head space being limited in the keg. Is it OK to leave the blow off on for the duration of the primary (2-3 weeks) or show I try to swop it out for an air lock. Thanks!

    Rocking Keggle question

Not sure if this is an issue or how I can fix it but essentially the bottom of the keg I just picked up it deeper than the rim meaning it kind of rocks around. Not a big deal but wondered if anyone had encountered this before. Was this a design fault or did someone purposefully make the...

    Wheat flakes

I'm brewing a wheat ale. I have a bag of wheat flakes. Do I need to crush these along with my barley? Thanks

    Broken bottom on corney

So I purchased some used corneys recently and on a couple you can see the rubber piece that it sits on has been glued on. I was cleaning one and it came off completely. I glued it back on with a heat gun but again after cleaning it just fell off again. Has anyone had success with any other...

    My lucky day!

So I was driving home from work today literally listening to a pod cast of basic brewing radio. ( I'm just getting into kegging and took delivery of 4 reconditioned corney kegs last week) Anyway something caught my eye as I'm driving along ...KEGS outside a little restaurant. So I stop in and...

    Ready to bottle?

So I did a pale ale 3 weeks ago. OG was 1.042 and final was 1.006 so im guessing that's ok. There still seems to be a bit of yeast on the surface but it tastes pretty good. What do you guys think? Was worried it was infected but tastes good.

    Small Rhizomes

Ok so I got hold of a cascade rhizomes it was about 6 inches long. The guy I got it from said I could easily cut it up and plant it to grow more so I cut it into pieces about 2 inches long. Now I'm looking at pics and they seem bigger. Each piece had some roots and new shoots. Do you think they...

    Does this look ok?

So I made this as my first all grain and I think it went pretty well. It's 9 days since I brewed and I still have a little fermentation going on, the temp is in the low 60's. There is still some krausen on top which with the kits I've done would have gone already. Its a little patchy as well, is...

    Move it or leave it

So I did my first AG yesterday and it went pretty well. It's now happily bubbling away and fermenting nicely. My fermentation temp is about 72F and I realize that this is a little high for a safale 05. And that's the ambient air temp so it's likely warmer. Should I move it somewhere else in...

    Bottles in Toronto

Anyone in and around the Toronto area know where to get bottles cheaply? Cheers

    Bottled first beer - BINGO

So yesterday I set about bottling my first homebrew (and drinking some). Now I can see why many of you are hooked on this great pastime. It tastes good so i'm hoping it just gets better from there. One question I have is that I understand the ideal temperature for letting the bottles...
