    Had my airlock blow out

I made a batch of coffee roasted porter and pitched in the yeast, which I used a starter. Well between midnight and 9am it blowed out, there was porter on the bucket the 3 gallon carboy was sitting on and still some in the air lock. I figured with the pressure being elevated still and with...

    First partial mash brew

I took the step to do more advanced brewing techniques and crushed a pound of wheat malt to steep and sparge to add to 6.6 pounds of Briess bavarian liquid wheat malt extract. So I tried for a hefeweizen type beer. I had to make do with regular ale yeast, but I scored an ounce of Tettnang hops...

Can I use a coffee mill for crushing grains?

I'm slowly entering the partial mash phase after being an extract only brewer for a wee over a year. I don't want to buy or build a full blown malt mill at the moment. Can I use a coffee grinder to coarse grind the grain?

    Milky haze in the carboy?

I've tried to keep a steady warm temp in the bedroom and closet area to help on the long ferment of a cranberry ale, but the wife has turned the heater off at times. Is the haze natural to those re-fermenting beer with fruit? Is it safe?

    Brewferm Christmas beer

Today I sampled the batch made back in September. It's too much on spices for my taste. Maybe a few more days in the fridge will improve it, but it's hard to say.

Bottle of Christmas beer went boom

Had six liters of a Brewferm Christmas beer aging for about a week after bottling, woke up and bottom blew out of one of the EZ-Bottles. I think I'll stick the others in the fridge to kill off the carbonation in the rest. :(

    Hoptober golden ale

I love this seasonal. If you like Redhook's Longhammer IPA... Give this one a try. I drool at the smell of the pour and getting to do the same at them mention of it's name.

Mixed results on my last two beers

Sometime back I split a can of ale malt extract and made two 3 gallon batches. One was pumpkin and the other was a molasses flavored beer. I sampled both on the day I bottled. The molasses ale was sweet but almost no alcohol I thought, while the pumpkin I over-spiced. I waited two more weeks and...

    Wish me luck

I'm starting a Brewferm Christmas beer kit in the middle of a marathon bottling day. I've corked up 3 gallons of molasses ale, and I'm using the new brew as a pause before bottling my first pumpkin ale attempt.

    Tonite's experiments

I'm taking a 3.3 lb can of Munton's dark ale malt extract and splitting it into two three gallon batches. Can I get some feedback First up is an attempt at a pumpkin ale; half can malt, 1lb of corn sugar, a can of pumpkin, and an ounce of kent's golden pellet hops added to the boil. Yeast is a...

When to add the pellet hops and for how long

I'm trying to wean myself off of whole prepackaged brew kits so I've got a can of ale malt and some cascade hop pellets along with the bags to put them in. So when during the process after I add the sugar and the canned malt do I add the pellet hops? I'm going to take a can that makes 6 gallons...

    Water filtering

I'm somewhat new to home brewing, 6 extract kits to my credit now, so i'm wondering can filtering the tap water help? I'm on chlorinated water , which by it's nature is supposed to kill microbes. How does this harm the yeast during the ferment? I'm thinking about a faucet mounted filter like Pur...

    Brewferm's diablo...

I'm tasting a batch I made late April/early May and I am impressed. Good bite on the back of it and not overly sweet like their Grand Cru. Next batch bourbon soaked oak chips will get added as an experiment. :mug:

Brewferm kits, 2 tasted and one more bottled

Well I brewed up a Grand Cru and the last Kriek kit from the local supplier back in January. I let the kits set in their secondary fermenters for eight weeks versus 10 days before bottling. Then I tasted one of each at 2 days, little to no carbonation, opened another set up at two weeks...

    made a dyslexic mistake

I brewed up a batch of munton's beer and grabbed a 5lb bag of sugar which I thought was a 2lber... It was a 2.27 kg bag instead. Well i didn't find out until way after the fact what kind of havoc can I expect?

    Greetings from North Carolina

Hi, I'm a rookie with only one completed batch of brew under my belt. I've been wanting to make more and see if I can do better. I hope to study up on this forum and give it another go soon.
