    Efficeincy Help

I am flummoxed by my consistently low efficiency-- 60-65% after 40 or so AG batches. So I'm here for some suggestions. I've read the sticky, and have tried all thicknesses of mashes, long mashes, mashing out, single and double batch sparges, stir like crazy-- nothing has a measurable impact on...

    Am I killing my efficiency...

by mashing too thin? I use the "Denny" set-up, but for some reason have not been mashing out. I mash thin, drain the mash tun, measure my first runnings, and do a single batch sparge with the necessary volume of very hot water. I try to get a 40/60 to 50/50 split in first and second runnings...

Fresh Orange Zest in an India Black Ale

I'm mid-boil on an India Black Ale. Grain bill is 2-row, C120 and Victory. Steeped 8oz of de-bittered black patent. Bitterred with Simcoe and flavored with Amarillo. Thinking about adding an ounce of fresh orange zest at flame-out. Any thoughts?

    Maris Otter in an IIPA

Anyone with experience using 100% MO in an IIPA? Plan is to use a little Munich and C60 as well and hop it up to 80ish IBUs with Simcoe/Centennial/Cascade. Any thoughts?

Help switching from bottle to tap H2O

I'd like some help with switching from bottled spring water to brewing with my tap water. It is great tasting and nationally recognized as some of the best water in the country. I'm curious if I should filter, and what additions, if any, I should make for a basic all-grain IPA, for example...

    Ammonia Smell (and taste)

The recipe was a 70 IBU Rye IPA, about 15% rye, using all Amarillo. This was my first AG batch using the municipal water. My water system treats with chloramine, so I added a tiny bit of potassium metabisulfite and some gypsum. Previously I've used bottled water with no additions with good...

    Starting Washed Yeast

Quick Question: Is it OK to pour the cooled starter wort into the 2 quart jar containing the washed yeast (after I decant the clear liquid) and let the starter grow in there? It was sterilized when I put the yeast in originally.

    Bubbles when draining mash tun

I use a rectangular cooler with a braid. Works really well and, after a few reps (increased sparge temps and stirring was the key for me), I am getting 75-80% eff. I try to drain the tun dry every time (double batch sparge). Towards the end of each sparge I get bubbles in the drain hose as...

How long will yeast cake last?

Can I rack off a US-05 cake today and dump a new batch in on Sunday? Same gravity beer. Anything I should do to keep the yeast happy between now and Sunday? Thanks.

    Please critique my process

10 gallon rectangular cooler with braid almost the length of the cooler. 13.5lb grain bill. LHBS crush set @ .041". OG into fermenter at 70% should have been 1.062. Bottled spring water, no adjustments. Mashed with 5 gallons of 163 degree water. Stirred like crazy. Temp stabilized at 153...

    What did I just brew?

The plan was to brew a Red Rye Ale along the lines of a Founders, but back off the hops a bit. My LHBS did not have Cara Red. The owner recommended Carafa I as a substitute. I now know better. Anyway, the grain bill ended up looking like this: 8# 2 Row 1.25# Carafa I 1.25# Crystal 80...

    Rectangular 48 qt?

I brew (for now) exclusively 5 gallon batches and am heading to AG. I like to brew a variety of beers but want the ability to brew higher gravity beers (my first AG batch will have a 12.75lb grain bill). I have a perfectly good 48 qt rectangular cooler. Should I convert it for AG purposes...

    Un-carbed Tripel

Tripel brewed (extract w/ steeped grains) in early August. Bulk primed and bottled in early September. When I first tasted it in October, it tasted good but there was no carbonation. I agitated the bottles and moved to a warmer location (70-75 degrees). Three weeks ago, after still no sign...
