    underfill a keg?

Been doing 1 gal batches and about to step up to 5g. But had been pondering the 2.5 & 3 gal kegs for recipe creation. Any probs with under filling a keg?

    BIAB pH?

I'm diggin the BIAB method. Should I add in the 5.2 stuff or just let it roll. (I do have pH meters, but never remember to use them :drunk: )

    A bit sweet

I've brewed a bunch of 1 gal batches and finally getting the nerve to start trying them (first batch ferm'd @ a high temp and was fusel; go figure. So I was a bit gun shy) But just tried a APA with some rye (just me messing with ingredients). Crystal clear, brownish color (But I can't taste...

    A Lager version of Saf-05?

Just looking for a clean/easy near do-all dry lager yeast (not too many choices) Does it exist? Now that the cooler temps are here I'd figure I'd try a couple lagers.

    Shifted gravities?

I did a couple BIAB's and the OG was higher then I expected 1060 (guess I got better eff then I expected) and final was 1020, which is about 10 high on both ends. Anything to be concerned about or try to fix next round? Just run of the mill APAs. (no I'm not scared and about to dump the...

    Wheat Q and time

I've read that wheats finish quick. Now is that because of the wheat or the yeast? (just did a extract wheat with Safale US-05 and wondering) (hey whats with the gun add at the top? I though gunpowder and alcohol don't mix. I do dig both, no poltical slant, just the humor of it...

    Hops and color

I did a quick wheat extract beer last week or there abouts. I did a late addition extract, so the hops (pellets) were in for the full 60 minutes. Using just the hops, the color was rather dark at time for extract. How does Budwieser make such a pale beer?

    newbie Q: whats a double?

I've been floating this forum (and the beer tools' since I own the software) for a bit. But what makes a double or triple a double/triple? I've done a quick search (net), and it seems related to hops (though ABV seems to be higher, around the 2x range too) Is there a rule of thumb? Does it...

    BIAB, high OG?

I just brewed a 1 gal batch of an APA via BIAB. Full water volume to strike temp, dough in, mash, drain, boil. (added about 1-2 cups water at boil start, level was a bit low) I'm using a refractometer for all readings (though also used a hydrometer after boil to compare) The pre boil (with...

    Too Long?

I got ultra lazy. I have 2 beers I brewed in mid July one is still in primary, other in secondary (dry hopping) Both ales, nothing special and been sitting at 64F. Is it too late to bottle them? They are small 1 gal batches, so its no great loss to toss, nor to bottle and its not right...

    Dry yeast and pitching temp

I've seen odd guidelines. Like pitch at ferm temps (kinda makes sense, but feel that rule of thumb is for liquid yeast) For dry yeast the packets almost always (at least the tones I've used) say to rehydrate at around 90F. So if the 90F doesn't kill them, why can't I pitch at less then...

    Color/SRm Q

I've brewed a couple 1 gal batches that after brewing missed, by a LOT, the color. One was a AG rye (1/2 rye 1/2 2-row) Other was a light DME SMaSH. The rye, going into primary was *green*, but I attributed that to the rye. It mellowed out a week later but still dark. The SMaSH, only...

    Yet another dry hop Q(s)

I'm doing little 1 gal batches till all is dialed in, and a happy recipe or 3. Can I dry hop in primary or is racking to secondary a better route? If I can with little or no effect, should I wait or is it ok at pitching? (or when the violence is over and its just mellowing; visually or via SG...

    Reason for steeping grains?

I've read that the steeping grains don't add much, if any, fermentables. They obviously add color. But how much impact do they have on flavor? And on the flavor theme, to get more a caramel malty flavor, better to use less grains of a higher lovibond or more grains of a lesser? and is it...

    Yet Another first brew tasting.

Well I finally tried my first brew, a BB Red Ale. Made mistakes on it. (got drunk brewing. My rule now is no drinking until the 15min hops go in :drunk: ) Didn't aerate the wort (even siphoned it into the fermenter. Though I did use an IC wort cooler, one plus) Broke my hydrometer while...

    Vessel dimension ratios?

Does it matter? A boil kettle or mash tun being tall and narrow over short and wide? I can see it mattering more with a mash tun. Taller the more pressure at the bottom, possibly compacting it a bit more then a wide shallow version. Main reason for the Q is I'm looking to use up less...

    Brewballs? Look kinda cool

Hey, I'm sure many others got the e-mail from Austin, but the brewballs look kinda cool. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=12581 Could be good for us newbies.

So has anyone infected a batch from poor sanitizing?

    Brew in bag?

Not sure if this belongs here or the AG forum, but being a newbie.... Was watching the BasicBrewing video and saw the brew in bag deal. Looked pretty slick. No mash tun or sparging, just lift the bag out (and optional squeeze) when its time to boil. There has GOT to be a down side: what...

Tiny batches (1 gal/4l) Some Qs

Since I'm starting out would rather screw up a small batch. Plus more brewing fun. (I'm doing a bit lighter/session beers, OG=1.050ish) (used dry yeast and 1/2 a 11g packet per batch) With just a 1 gal batch, I don't want to pull out a lot of samples for a SG reading, so my theory is to...
