White film on top of beer

I brewed a dry Irish stout (~5%abv) awhile ago, bottled 3 gallons, and then split the remaining 2 gallons into 2 separate 1 gallon carboys to age with 1/2lb of frozen cherries I bought from whole foods. The initial bottles were really good, but I recently checked on my aging remainder and found...

    First all grain exploded

I have been extract brewing for a few years now and recently decided to take the plunge to all grain. I made my mash tun, got all my equipment ready and brewed my first pumpkin beer. Everything seemed to go without a hitch. I checked on my bucket for the first 2 days, bubbling normally, and...

Help Quick! I need a recipe

My friend just called me up saying that he got the ingredients for his first homebrew batch and for me to come over. All he bought was 1oz of Simcoe, 3.3lb of amber extract and 3.3lb of dark extract. Does anyone have a recipe that utilizes some or all of these ingredients. It will be a 5...

    Tea beer

My father has taken an interest in my beer brewing, and absolutely loves tea, specifically oolong. I was wondering if anyone has tried to make an oolong or green tea beer. Thanks!

    Strawberry wine tasting

Hey guys, I have been brewing beer for about a year, and over this past summer I had a access to a bunch of fruit from a berry patch. I decided to put my beer equipment to good use, and find a nobler use of strawberries than pie. I made 5 gallons of strawberry wine, I found the recipe on Jack...

    Too cold?

I am making an American IPA with the Safale US-05 american yeast. It is winter here, and fairly cold, and to save some money on electricity, I have kept the heat off. The apartment temp is around 62 F, is this a problem for the yeast?

    Double Pale Ale vs (D)IPA?

I was in total wine the other day, and noticed several double pale ales, Flying Dogs's comes to mind. My question is what makes a beer a double pale ale instead of a pale ale, IPA, or DIPA? Edit, changed dogfish head to flying dog

    First time wine making

Hey guys, my friend works at a berry patch and said he could get me 30lbs of strawberries for free. I have heard of people making strawberry wine, can anyone help me out with the recipe and the process? I have 2 plastic fermenting buckets and a bottling bucket, do I have to have a glass carboy...

    I can't carbonate Belgian beer

This is my second Belgian beer that I have brewed that hasn't carbonated. I brewed, aged in the primary for 3 1/2 weeks, bottled with enough sugar for high carbonation, and its been over 3 weeks in the bottles. I tried one last night, and it was flat as could be, zero carbonation. My other...

    Orange Peel addition

I do not currently have access to a carboy, but I would like to brew a wheat beer with a hint of orange. Could I add orange peel to the primary after fermentation finishes? If so, how long should I leave it in there. I usually keep my beer in the primary for 3-3 1/2 weeks, should I change...

    The beer won't carbonate

It's been 3 weeks since I bottled this https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f71/easy-chimay-blue-clone-73965/ To carbonate, I used carbonation drops, 5 in each bottle (instructions said 5 for high carbonation) and when I opened one of these beers up, it was totally flat. I thought maybe it was a...

    Will it be ok?

I was bottling my first non kit batch of beer last night, and realized I didn't have the priming sugar to add in just before bottling. I used Wyeast Beer Nutrient Blend because I wasn't thinking. Will this adversely impact the beer, and is there anything I can do? Also, what should I use in...

Suggestions on a Young's double chocolate stout

I found this recipe on another site, and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. Also, I had read that adding vanilla to a chocolate beer can bring out the chocolate more, so I was thinking of trying that. Any suggestions on the amounts of vanilla to use, or the type? O.G. - 1.049...

When to secondary, and other random aging questions

Hey guys, I am new to brewing and the forums, and I know there are a ton of threads similar to this one (I have read many of them), but I am looking for a more concrete answer. I recently brewed this beer, https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f71/easy-chimay-blue-clone-73965/ and when I asked a...

    Fermentation time before secondary

Hey guys, I made this recipe https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f71/easy-chimay-blue-clone-73965/ and it says to rack to the secondary after 5 days. Well, the yeast was still quite bubbly on the top of the wert even today (9 days). Should I wait for activity to stop, or just put it in the secondary...

    Bananas?

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f71/easy-chimay-blue-clone-73965/ I followed the recipe and ingredients exactly, with the exception of having to make my own lyles out of 16oz water, 1lb white sugar and a dash of lemon. I brewed Saturday night, so 5 nights ago and my beer closet smells of...
