    Yay beer!

So I pulled out a bottle of my APA that I bottled last weekend and threw it in the fridge this morning (I like to sample my batches during the carb process). Got home from work 20 minutes ago and I have 1 swig, nay, 0 swigs left. Delicious, balanced, hop character is subtle, but present...

    Efficiency improvement... Woot!

After using my new rig for 6 batches, and averaging 65% brewhouse efficiency, I just achieved 89%... The only change I made was recirculating the sparge water through the mash for 15 minutes, instead of just letting it sit. Looks like my 5% abv kolsch is now going to be a 7ish percenter...

    How to brew cheap beer:

Buy in bulk and wash yeast. After getting in on a bulk hop group buy, I decided to look into how much I would save buying everything in bulk (minus specialty grains). Using the hops I just signed up for (2 lbs us goldings, 1 lb ger hallertau), I can make 23 4 gallon batches of beer. Using...

    Thermometer calibration

I have access to calibrated, lab grade temp measurement equipment at work. Instead of calibrating at freezing and boiling, like is usually done at home, is there any reason I couldn't calibrate at mash temps? I've seen thermometers vary at different points in their temp range, but be dead in...

Attn: smokers who would like to quit

Have you tried electronic cigarettes? I smoked for 8 years, up to 2 packs a day at one point. Tried wellbutrin, the patch, gun, lozenges, support groups, etc. With the help of electronic cigarettes, I haven't had a regular cigarette in almost a year now. I feel better, breathe easier...

    Sometimes homebrew sucks

I just got home from work, stopped by the garage to grab a cream ale that is currently cold conditioning, for a taste test. Relaxing, watching tv, finished the cream (chlorophenol taste has dropped out substantially since last week....woot!), half drunk (on a diet, hungry, lightweight, say what...

For those using window air conditioners in their ferm chambers

How long (per hour) does yours run at lagering temps? Mine (5300 btu) spends about 15 minutes per hour running, cooling a 2x2x3 chamber insulated with a minimum of r-10 with a set point of 35 and ambient temps around 70. Just trying to get a feel for what is "normal"

    Nothing better

Than coming home after a long day of class and work, and sitting down on the couch with the first homebrew after a yer hiatus. No more haitus for this guy, finishing up my ferm chamber tomorrow, year round brewing, hells yeah

    Fermentation chamber build verification

Building a fermentation chamber in the upcoming weeks, just want to double check my plans. Dimensions are roughly 4x3x2. I'm using a 5000 btu air conditioner to cool it. I'm planning on a dual chamber, one for lagering, the other for ales. The lager chamber will closest to the air conditioner...

    Aging: what exactly happens?

Does the yeast clean up it's mess, or is some other process taking place?

    Dual Temp Fermentation Chamber?

I'm planning on building a fermentation chamber cooled by a dorm fridge within the next few months. Each chamber would be just large enough for a 6.5 gallon carboy with airlock. Ideally, it would be dual temp/dual chamber, controlled by 2 ebay temp controllers. The chamber closest to the fridge...

    Help with next purchase

My birthday was yesterday, and I have some money to spend on brewing. I have a 5g MLT, 5g HLT, 30 qt kettle with ball valve, corona and counterflow chiller. Some of that money is going towards a fermentation fridge/controller, and another portion towards a 3 tier stand build, but I'm not sure...

    o4_srt's epic brewing adventure

I recently bought the book "Brewing Classic Styles" By Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer. After perusing it, I started thinking. I'm 26, and am relatively new to craft beer, hell, beer in general. When I brew, I usually stick to what I like, which is fine, since I am the sole consumer, for the...

bayou classic sp10 + banjo burner?

Just picked up a standard sp10 with stand, is it possible to modify it to accommodate a banjo burner?

    Efficiency Question

Made my second all grain beer today, and have a few questions. I used a corona mill to crush my grain, however I conditioned the malt first. I'm BIAB'ing, and my first batch tasted great when I racked to secondary, but it's OG was low as well. My efficiency into boiler was 88%, which I...

    Coffee Vanilla Brown

Ok, so here's the deal. I'm planning on making a coffee vanilla brown tomorrow morning, and need some input Batch Size: .75g (little more than a 6 pack) OG: 1.065 FG: 1.017 Estimated SRM: 17.5 Bitterness: 26.8 IBU's 0.34 pale malt (2 row US) 1.01 lb maris otter 0.15 lb Crystal 60 0.15 lb...

Corona mill + computer fan + duct = husk removal?

I currently have a corona mill I use for cracking my grain, however, there seems to be quite a bit of shredded husk. Since the husk weighs significantly less than the grain itself, I was thinking I could use a 12v computer fan (120mm), and make a duct system out of cardboard and duct tape or...

Does bitter beer mellow with age?

Hello all, I'm in the middle of fermenting my first batch of beer (Imperial Pale Ale kit), and just removed some for a sg reading (1.040 after 2.5 days). I know this style is supposed to be rather bitter and hoppy, but I tasted a bit of the brewing beer, and it was EXTREMELY bitter. Will that...
