    Leaving wort for 24 hrs

So my grain bill was accidentally messed up - my local store misread my handwriting and gave me 2 lbs of marris otter instead of 7 lbs. I planned on adding 3 lbs of DME to my wort to make up for the loss of grain, but I am short on that as well since I've been using my supply for yeast starters...

Substituting Marris Otter for Pilsner malt

I am thinking of brewing up a belgian white for a 7am football tailgate. The recipe is calling for belgian pilsner malt as part of the base, but I have a bunch of Marris Otter from a bulk buy. What kind of effect on the beer would I expect if I use marris otter instead of the pilsner malt?

    Grains of paradise substitution

Does anybody have any suggestion for a substitution for grains of paradise. My LHBS doesn't carry it and I can't find it in my grocery store.

    Sanitizing a plage chiller

So I just got a plate chiller from keg cowboy and I am trying to figure out what would be the best way to sanitize the plate chiller before I run the wort through it. I don't have a pump so that is out of the question as of now. Would it be good enough to soak the plate chiller into a bucket...

    Nikon d5000 question

I have a question for anybody who is familiar with dSLR cameras, specifically my nikon d5000. I want to get an AC power adapter so that I can make a time lapse video with the camera but I am not sure what accessory that I need to get. It is hard for me to tell from the nikon website as...

    First lager attempt a succcess

So I just tried my first lager (which was an attempted Penn Dark clone), and I think it turned out great. I am waiting for a friend of mine to come down in about a month with some Penn Dark so I can compare it side by side to my brew. It's been awhile since I had a Penn Dark so I don't...

    Kegged my first lager!

Well, I've gone over to the cold side and finally kegged my first lager. It is my first attempt at cloning a Penn Dark lager. The next one that I will try to make will be an Oktoberfest beer. I figure that it would seem like a good time to brew one up in the coming month and have it ready for...

    Any audiophiles here?

So after throwing in a concert DVD in my PS3 to turn up while I cleaned the house I noticed a hollow sound from my surround system. I stood near my front speakers and I noticed that I have no working subwoofer, which explains why some pearl jam sounded hollow. Is anybody here familiar with...

Will I have enough yeast from this starter

So I wake up in the morning and I see this from my starter. I know in fact that I will have enough yeast. I actually only needed the first growler, and for some reason I made two. I figure that somebody will get a good kick out of the activity from the starters

    Coca-Cola's recipe cracked?

I'm not a soda maker, but I stumbled on this like today. http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/02/15/is-this-the-real-thing-coca-colas-secret-formula-discovered/ Here is a summary of why they believe it is the recipe for Coca-Cola: "Producers of the radio program This American Life came across...

Help name my recent batch of beer

I'm not as good at coming up with smart names for beers as you guys here, so I'll ask for some assistance. During my last brew session of a robust porter a honey bee fell into the wort during the boil. It was early in the boil so it would be a bittering bee and not a flavor/aroma bee. I...

Possible idea for step mashing with Igloo MLT

So I came up with an idea for step mashing with an igloo MLT and I am curious what the HBT community here would think for this process. Instead of boiling a small amount of grain and mash via a traditional decoction method, what about just draining out the entire mash from the MLT and then...

Plate Chillers - Siphon wort with pump or gravity

So I am trying to take an informal poll, or at least get the pro's and con's. I am thinking of investing some money and getting a plate chiller for the summer brewing months as it is ball sweaty hot here in the summer and I can't chill the wort that great. When using a plate chiller should...

    Can Apfelwein oxidize????

I have a batch of apfelwein that has been in a fermenter for nearly a year. I want finally take it out of the fermenter and bottle it. I will likely not try to carbonate it as there is probably almost no yeast in suspension. My question is can the apfelwein oxidize from the transfer of...

    ProMash Mash Efficiency Calculator

Just a little note out there for people who use ProMash and get some odd efficiency calculations. If you are adding items such as honey or candi sugar, or anything else with sugar content after you take your gravity reading for mash efficiency calculations, your value will be artificially low...

    Cluster v/s Wye Challenger hops

Apparently I grabbed the wrong hops from my LHBS for my Northern Brown that I am brewing today, and they are all closed on Mondays so I can't go to pick up the right one. It originally called for Wye Challenger and I grabbed cluster. I am using 1 oz. of the cluster hops for a full 60 min...

    Dubbel Red Balls

First I will explain the reason behind the name of the beer. I really loved the Chappell Show and I loved Tyrone and the Red Balls skit, so this just seemed to fit. Now on to the beer. The color is a nice red color (I will post a pic in a few days of the pour from the keg, its dark outside...

What happens with a diacetyl rest when not necessary?

So in my self education with lagering through Palmer's How to Brew and this forum I have read many times that with brewing lagers, a diacetyl rest may be needed at or near the end of fermentation. All the information that I have seen has stated that to perform the diacetyl rest only if needed...

Lager in corny or better bottle 5 gal secondary

So I am getting close to going into the lager phase of my first lager beer. I was wondering what people think of lagering in either my 5 gallon better bottle carboy or just transfer it straight into my corny keg? If I should use the corny keg should I transfer to a fresh keg after the planned...

    Volume expansion with dry hopping

I'm guessing that this is fairly known here but I couldn't find this on the search...maybe I'm not the best at HBT searching. I dry hopped a batch of beer today, biermunchers outer limits IPA, and I filled up my better bottle up to the bottom of the neck of the bottle. My guess is that with...
