    Keezer bottom is disgusting

I had an unfinished keg sitting in my keezer and neglected it for a couple of months (had no time to brew for months). I took out the keg, and there was a lot of frozen condensation at the bottom and, because of an apparent leak, some beer and funk. I unplugged the keezer and let it sit with...

    Mash&Boil vs Robo Brew

I'm researching both, so I thought I'd share the comparison chart I created. Happy to add to the chart, so if there are other features/differences you think should be noted, feel free to add a comment and I'll add to the original post. All info is taken from the product pages (and Q&A tabs) at...

    BeerAlchemy not starting up

BA version: 2.1.3 MacOS version: 10.12.13 Hadn't started the app in months, tried to start it yesterday. Gave me a window about finding my files or something. Clicked what I thought to be the appropriate choice (that I hadn't moved my data files), and the software immediately crashed Now...

    Hydrometer wax(?) is breaking

The red stuff at the bottom of my hydrometer, which I believe to be wax, is chipping away slightly. When I take a reading, it all sits on the main chunk of wax, which is in the bottom where it should be. Any thoughts on if this could affect my gravity readings? Thanks.

    Infected?

I don't recall ever seeing bubbles like this on top of the krausen. It smells normal to me. This is an IPA. Thanks.

    Malto Dextrin

I am entering an Austin Homebrew recipe into Beer Alchemy, and the recipe calls for 8 oz of Malto Dextrin. MD doesn't exist as an ingredient in Beer Alchemy, so I need to add it and I need the stats for it. Based on the description, it doesn't seem to add color, so I am guessing that the L=0...

    Leftover IPA

I'm still relatively new to concocting my own recipes. I have a bunch of random ingredients lying around from different batches, so I thought I'd make an IPA out of them and call it "Leftover IPA." I'm looking for a straight up American IPA, nice and clean, hoppy. I own everything on the list...

    Water temp mixing calculator

I'm sure others have found this, but I thought I'd share this quick/simple conversion calculator for mixing two liquids of different sources/temps/ http://www.onlineconversion.com/mixing_water.htm Just used it and it calculated my blend perfectly.

    Partial mash, small(?) error

I'm currently in the middle of the mash for a partial mash pale ale recipe. I was reading the wrong printout and I'm mashing the grains in 2.5 gallons instead of under a gallon, as the directions actually call for. The temp took a bit longer to bring down because there was so much water...

    Is my beer infected?

This is my first batch in about 9 months and I can't remember if this is normal or not. The krausen dropped out about 2 days ago (5 days in) but this stuff stayed on top. That break in the middle is where my sample thief broke the surface. I brought the fermenter upstairs and expected the...

Crushed grain: how long can it sit?

Hi, I have two bags of crushed grain from September. They are not vacuum sealed, just tied loosely with twist ties. They have been sitting in a cool, dark basement. I wouldn't say our basement gets humid, but there definitely could be some moisture in the air from when our hot water heater...

    Timing of steps...

So I know that a lot of people recommend the 1-2-3 timing method (1 week in primary, 2 weeks in secondary, 3 weeks in bottles). And I know a lot of people don't secondary, instead going 3-3 (3 weeks in primary and 3 weeks in bottles). What do you do if you're kegging? I'm curious what...

    A Summer Ale recipe

Hi folks, I've been contemplating and tinkering with a summer ale for well over a year and I'm finally getting around to brewing it. My goal is an APA type beer that's very citrusy, which I hope will make it very refreshing. I've really enjoyed the citra hop and the nelson sauvin the few...

Worst brew day ever, trying to save it

Morning, Brewing More Beer's Shark Bite kit. Didn't hit my mash temp (cooler), was at 146 at mash in. Slowly tried to bring up temp with extra water, wasn't working. I was getting worried about too off of a grist ratio, and I think that same problem had an impact on my last brew. So I...

Morebeer Pizza Port Shark Bite kit

Hi all, Brewing the all grain version of this kit tomorrow and I was putting the recipe into my brew software and I'm having an issue with the hop profile/IBU's. I'm hoping someone here has done this kit and can clarify. The hop profile as indicated on the "instruction" sheet is 1 oz of...

    Starter in fridge: decant first?

I have had a starter on a stir plate for about 36 hours. My brew days was pushed back, so I will be placing the starter in the fridge. I've read a few threads about placing the starter in the fridge, but I didn't notice anything about if I should decant the wort first. I would think the wort...

Stuck fermentation or too efficient a mash

My recent all grain batch of AHS Fat Tire Ale clone appears to be stuck at about 1.019/1.020 (after three weeks, gr hasn't moved in two weeks). Expected fg is 1.011. Apparrent attenuation is 61% (instead of 75%). I'm usually ok with my fg being close, but this seems a bit farther than I'm...

What's at the bottom of my kettle?

I'm pretty sure I've read about this somewhere, and I know (think) it's not harmful. So, what is it? How do I remove it? Or should I forget about it? And I doing something in my process that's causing this? In the picture the kettle has been cleaned. Sent from my iPhone using HB Talk

Need beer ready for a party

I have an American pale ale that's been fermenting for just over a week (brew date was june 22). I would love to have this beer ready for a party on July 9. I realize that under any circumstance that isn't much time and that I will need to force carb. My concern is packaging the beer. Since the...
