    Wort chiller as heat exchanger?

I have an immersion chiller that I would like to use in a pot of boiling water to run my wort through with my march pump while mashing in order to maintain temp and clarify the wort. Has anyone ever tried this? I brew all grain in 5gal batches with a picnic cooler mashtun.

    A problem?

I would like to try brewing a beer and cooling it down to like 90 deg in the kettle, transfer to the carboy, put it into my fermentation chest freezer, take 2-3 hours to cool it down to 68ish deg and then pitch yeast. Does anyone think that this will pose a problem? Thanks

    Someone else has done this

Decided to be impatient with my chilling of an IPA yesterday and threw a sanitized bottle of frozen water in the pot while also using my immersion chiller. Problem is I think there was still some of the glue left to fasten the label left on the bottle. I fastened a sanitized hop straining bag...

    storing a full corny

Second kegged beer is now corbonated just the way I like it. I will not be drinking it for at least a month or two. What is the best way to store it? Room temp? serving temp? Under pressure or with the gas line removed? With all pressure relieved or with carbonating pressure or serving...

    Firestone DBA Kit

Has anyone tried the Firestone DBA kit? I recently bottled this and the oak taste from the chips added to primary and secondary was really strong when I tasted the FG sample. Will bottle conditioning and a bit of time mellow the oak flavor out? I have had many DBA's and although the oak is...

    Aluminum Keg

Got a keg from a friend (they were late returning it and the liquor store said we are keeping the deposit, you can keep the keg) it is an aluminum made by Firestone. At least that is what is stamped on it. Shoud I keep it for a HLT or give it back to him?

    Attenuation math

Does this look correct? OG FG OG (1.068 - 1.016) / (1.068-1) .052 / .068 0.76x100=76 This comes out to 76% attenuation if my math is correct, is it? Thanks, Brent

Bottle conditioning a Helles and a Bock

So I have two lagers that have been manipulating my fermentation chamber for over two months now and are ready to be bottled. A couple of questions first. 1. I have heard that adding a package of dry ale yeast to the bottling bucket that is filled with the beer and priming sugar...

    No Airlock

Got a problem. All set up for a Porter brewday tomorrow AM. I am short an airlock (I had two, one is apparently lost) My one airlock is on top of an IPA that is two weeks in the carboy with the dry hops added about 5 days ago. Am I wrong to go ahead and cover the already mostly fermented IPA...

    " Cold Crashing"

I don't pretend to know much but I have a question about bringing the temp down on a fermenting IPA. I am ready to add 2oz. of whole leaf cascade to my IPA after 8 days in primary, the hops are going in the primary carboy for at least two weeks. At the start of fermentation, the first in...

    Chest freezer for fermentation?

Hey Brewers, I am looking into purchasing a chest freezer for a fermentation chamber so I can continue to brew in the HOT summer months (over 90 for days on end is not unusual here). When I eventually start kegging it will be turned into a keezer. I already ordered a two stage ranco from...

    Taste of my IPA

I just had a bottle poured into a pint glass and an hour later there is still a decent foam layer on the beer. At the beginning it poured a perfect .75 inch. Another thing I am wondering is it seems thin on the mouth feel and the carbonation seems more "fizzy" than "bubbly". Anyone care to...

    Competition Integrity

I am currently brewing/fermenting a brew that I hope to enter in my first comp. The recipe is one I found online. Is this cool or not? Is it okay to enter a brew of your own making even though you did't formulate the recipe yourself. Even though I modified the hops a bit I still feel like this...

    Beersmith shutting down

I bought Beersmith about three weeks ago and love it. Brewed two batches of my own creation with the help of the software. My one problem is that occasionally the program stops working and shuts itself down. Have any other users had this problem and if so what if anything is the fix. Thanks, B.

I have a couple of extra $ and am looking to buy a small chest freezer and use it as a fermentation chamber until I can muster up the bigger $$ to convert it to a Keezer. Then I will buy a small fridge and build a moderately sized (3 6.5 Gal carboys) fermentation chamber around it. Is a...
