Yeast Washing: How big is too big?

I just began harvesting and washing yeast to build up my yeast bank. It has been said that you might not want to harvest yeast from a really big beer.....I'm guessing this is because these yeast are stressed and not as healthy. So, how big is too big? I have a stout with an OG of 1.080 that I...

    Homebrew Supplies in Alaska?

There is a good chance that my family will be moving to Alaska this summer (somewhere on the road system....Anchorage or possibly Fairbanks). How do you folks in AK get your homebrew supplies? I just looked to see what an order to Fairbanks would cost from MoreBeer or AHS and the price was...

Video: TOP TIER unboxing and assembly

At the risk of looking desperate for attention, I wanted to post this video in it's own thread. I had been interested in the Top Tier for a long time but I never purchased the stand because all the stock photos online looked underwhelming. I searched for user videos and found ZERO. I...

    Video: Thunderstruck Pumpkin All-grain Brew

This episode is centered on the brewing of Yuri's Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale. Also, this brewday was the first time I used my DudaDiesel plate chiller to chill wort. My sparge was a sticky mess, but we survived. The plate chiller performed very well. Crank it up to 720p and enjoy...

Does anyone out there own a TOP TIER?

I have scoured the web looking for videos on the top tier and there are two....one is boring, one is awesome. I have searched tirelessly for a forum thread that reviews the system.....I have found of few, but they consist mostly of people that have never owned or seen the unit complaining about...

    Shipping Yeast in the Summer

I just started experimenting with liquid yeasts. This summer my smack-packs have been arriving quite warm, even though they were only in transit 2 days and were in an insulated bag with a cool-pack. Does this have an adverse effect on the yeast? Should I not worry about it? What say you?

    Best Deal On Camlocks

I think it's time to start employing some kind of quick disconnect on my system. I noticed that AHS just put the stainless steel camlocks on sale. Is this the best route to go? Is the best price out there for these camlocks?

    Video: $80 DudaDiesel 30-Plate Chiller

I have seen these cheap plate chillers mentioned in several places. A couple folks said they purchased them, but their reviews offer little feedback. I purchased one of these chillers and filmed this video to document the unboxing and trial run. I also took about 1min to explain how plate...

    Hop Stopper/Oktoberfest Video

Because I am A) a big dork & B) totally addicted to homebrewing I decided to start making some video centered around my hobby. For my first episode I built Lil' Sparky's hopstopper and documented the results. I also added a cheap false bottom to my BK. See how these new pieces of...

    Need Help Finding Shank Hardware

So I need the nut seen here: http://www.kegworks.com/product.php?productid=16731&source=nextopia The thought of paying more than $9 (including shipping) for a single nut makes me want to kick a baby (not really, but you get the idea). I spent about 30 minutes in Lowes' plumbing section...

    Kegerator Insulation Help...

So I purchased a well-used, commercial bev-air kegerator. I replaced the evaporator fan and added a Ranco temp controller. The box cools quickly but warms up too fast, causing the compressor to run much more than I would prefer. I'm not finding any holes that are venting cold air. Should I...

    Ranco Probe for Kegerator

I have a used bev-air kegerator. I believe the 20 year old, dial thermometer on it is junk. On the lowest setting it's cooling liquid to 36 degrees and runs way too much. Sooooo, I just ordered an ETC ranco controller to remedy this. The question: Where should I place the probe? In the...

So I bought a massive commercial kegerator.....

On a whim, I offered a guy on craislist $900 and two cases of homebrew for a 4-tap, True, commercial kegerator. The seller was asking more than twice what I offered, but was intrigued by the idea of getting a bunch of homebrew and agreed to the deal. I didn't expect this offer to be...

    Vinegar flavor/aroma

I'm about to go check on a friend's beer. It's a Sierra Nevada clone that was tasted/smelled awesome at bottling. After 2 weeks in the bottle my buddy snuck a sample and claims it tastes like "beer vinegar." Could an infection like this take place at bottling? Apparently there are no...

    Bottle Conditioning Edwort's

I'm going to help a buddy do a batch of Edwort's Apfelwien and I have a simple question: How long will this stuff need to sit in the bottle? I want to let my friend know how long this process will take before he has a consumable product. He has never brewed anything before. Thanks in...
