    Weird liquid yeast smell

Hi, I did a starter couple of minutes ago with a whitelabs english ale liquid yeast. It might sounds stupid but, what it is supposed to smell (i mean, the yeast tube once open)? Once shaked in the tube, the yeast looks like curdle cream (not alot of liquid). Anyway, I pitched to my starter and...

    Flaked oat question

Hi, I'm going to brew a nutty brown ale tomorrow. The person at my HBS ordered flaked wheat instead of flaked oat. Can I use standard flaked oat I can find in grocery stores or the one used in brewery is different? I don't want to wait another week to brew this. Thanks.

1 or 2 packs of dry yeast?

I plan to brew a brown ale this weekend (OG 1.052) and I'll use dry nottingham yeast. I was just wondering, should I put 2 packs or only one is enough? I mean, is it preferable to have a stronger fermentation or can it give off flavors by adding too much yeast? Thanks.

    White crust in kegs? Limestone?

Hi, someone gave me some used kegs. I used Oxiclean, TSP for cleaning. Everything is clean but there is a thin little white crust (looks like calcium or limestone). Even if I rub it, it doesn't go away. Someone know what it is and how to remove it? I'd like to use these kegs. Thanks.

    Coriander seeds VS powder conversion

Hi, I'm starting a wit tomorrow and I have a small problem. The recipe needs 50 gm of coriander seeds, but all I have is coriander powder? Should I use 50 gm of powder? People at my local store told me to reduce the amount. I much should I add to a 5 gallons batch? Thanks for your help, this...

    Yeast starter questions

Hi, I've made my first yeast starter 24 hours ago. I use Whitelabs Belgian Wit yeast. I've made a 600 ml wort at 1.040 with pale DME. There is a slow yeast activity (few movements in the wort) but no bubbles in the airlock. I know it's pretty soon to worry about, but it's the first time I see...

    Witbier question

Hi, this question is for witbier experts ;) I'M planning my first witbier next weekend and I wonder if there are tips to make it troubled as commercial wit. I know it is not the best thing to do with wit, but I plan to keg it. Should I transfert part of the yeast bed into the keg? So, do you...

Beer with way too strong taste of hops

Hi, I'm new here, and a new home brewer too. I've made my first all grain beer (red ale) 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I'm ok with the amount of hops I added to it compared to the recipe but, this beer taste ONLY hops and nothing else! I like strongly hopped beers, but this one, I can't even...
