Uh. . . my kegerator decided to pour itself some beer.

I got home today after working 13 hours and went to my basement to pour off a pint. Much to my dismay, my kegerator had the same idea apparently. The floor was soaking wet and the front of my kegerator was sticky from beer. Lord knows how long it was drip dripping all over the place but after...

    Ugh, overshot mash temp

So I made the mistake of using my digital thermometer to measure my mash temps and I overshot and now I mashed in at 170F. How is this going to affect things? Can I let it cool down to 158F and hold the temp there or is it too late?

First all grain(and lager) finally kegged and carbed!

The busy holiday season really kicked my ass and even through I brewed in mid November I wasn't able to keg it until early Feb. It was an interesting trial and I had a couple of scares but it turned out great, almost. It was my first all grain and a lager so I knew I'd be running into a LOT of...

2nd All Grain beer, here we go!

Goodness, after a busy holiday season I'm finally back to brewing after a few months off! Today I'm brewing the Strawberry Dubbel from the forums here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/strawberry-dubbel-124335/ Batch sparging in my 10gal orange cooler right now. I hit 150F with 15 quarts...

    Stalled fermentation

Alright, I'm pretty sure I stalled out the fermentation on my first bock. I brewed it about a month ago and got an OG of 1.044; taking a refractometer reading I'm getting 7 brix and Beersmith is telling me the estimated OG was .998. The beer does still smell worty sweet and I was afraid...

    First all grain!!!!

Just wanted to share how easily my first all grain has been so far. I'm brewing on stovetop so I'm boiling with two kettles but the sparge didn't get stuck and everything is going great so far. I overshot my temp on the mash at first but I lost heat surprisingly quickly and kept it at a steady...

    First lager, couple of questions

Alright, so I'm prepping to make my first lager on Wednesday. I'm hoping that making the starter tonight will give me enough lead time including time to crash cool the yeast starter etc. According to MrMalty I need 4 liters of starter! My lager is going to be 1.070 and I've got 2 smack packs...

    Eep, excessive foaming!

I just tapped my first keg and after 3 glasses I'm still getting 3/4 a glass of foam. The keg is at 50F; been sitting in the kegerator for over a day and I have 10' of 3/16" beer line. I set my CO2 gauge to 12psi. When I open my tap the beer hisses and foams like crazy. According to the...

    Cleaning lines

Finally got my tap tower refurbished and all my pieces and parts gathered to get my "new" kegerator up and running. I don't currently have ANY corny kegs to fill with sanitizer to run through my system. I haven't even cut my lines but I did not want to hook up the 5 gallon keg of Great Lakes I...

Preparing for my first all grain; barrage of questions within.

Alright, so I'm planning on finally making the jump into all grain since I've had my equipment ready for a few months and my wedding is behind me and I've got some questions since it's been a few months since I've read up on the all grain process and frankly I'm a bit worried that I'll be rusty...

Yeast starter newbie, a few questions.

So I bought a couple of 2L Erlenmeyer Flasks so I can make some yeast starters. I'm tired of slow fermentation and hope this will help! I've got a couple of questions: Do I need an airlock or will I be alright with just putting some foil over the top? How can I calculate how much DME to...

Proud owner of an older model Perlick kegerator, questions!

I just bought my very first kegerator; an older model Perlick kegerator off of Craigslist. It's 5' long with 3 taps but doesn't have a CO2 tank, or regulators and I'm looking to replace the hoses too. I don't currently have my new baby home yet so I don't have specifics on model # etc but I'll...

    Irish Red has a strong banana/clove taste . . .

I've been sampling my Irish Red as I've done gravity readings and it's been coming along great but after dry hopping in secondary for a couple of weeks it now has a really strong banana/clove taste. I used 1/2 oz of whole Fuggles hops. Is this normal? I didn't detect banana/clove AT ALL when I...

Letting specialty grains steep for longer than 60 min

Does it hurt anything to let specialty grains steep for more than 60 minutes? SWMBO is having me help with errands and I'm in the middle of my brew day! Is there anything I need to do or just let the wort cool down before doing my boil?

Got new equipment, wanna break 'em in!

Alright, so I'm still a partial mash brewer since I haven't gotten a turkey fryer or a 2nd brew kettle to split an all grain batch between but I got my CFC and MLT built finally and I wanna use 'em! I'm running sanitizer through them right now and they'll be good to go for today's brewing...

Ugh, pretty sure this is bacteria. . .

I just took a look at my Irish Red tonight and there's some not so lovely white splotches on the top of the brew. . . Sorry for the crap quality, I snapped them with my phone.

Have you ever had an absolutely horrible day?

I decided the perfect way to forget about a stressful day at work would be to rack my Irish Red into secondary. Little did I know at the time it would be an even worse experience than dealing with the public for 9 hours. My auto siphon(which was kept with both pieces separate) would absolutely...

Planning a Bock; what kind of yeast to use

I'm planning on brewing my own recipe Bock next week and was wondering what kind of yeast I should use. I've read that some yeasts can't handle higher ABV fermentation very well and was hoping to get some input. Thus far I've only used dry yeast packets but I'm not opposed to using liquid...
