    Neuweiler Beer - "Nix Besser!"

I was went to my son's college crew regatta in Allentown, PA this morning and was strangely attracted to this building next to the riverfront. Allentown is run down as you imagine but this factory was clearly a source of pride at one point. Turns out it was a brewery! Of course! It was one...

Worst Fail Yet: False bottom failure

My brother came over and we brewed a Festbier on Sunday. I have a SABCO RIMS - old model. We added grain, stirred the mash, let it settle and started to recirculate. After a few minutes the flow stopped and it soon became clear that the system was clogged. Oh, boy what a mess. I had to take...

    Short and sweet Keezer build

I'll spare you the long build thread since I'm just standing on the shoulders of giants here. There is some great keezer porn here and my project is pretty modest. I'll just share a couple things I came across. I liked the idea of getting the taps and hoses out of the way when switching...

    My hop tripod

I though it was an original ideal but I see edWorts done with conduit. I have a crazy bamboo forest in my yard so I got to it. The distance to the top is nearly 18 ft. In retrosprect conduit might have been better. This bamboo gets materially weaker as it dries. I hope it lasts the season...

    Show us your first Brew

I was looking through my old brewing log and got a bit nostalgic. Here is the first brew from 1986. Note I repurposed a grad school notebook for a better cause. Hard to believe I called it "Delicious!" I had no refrigeration in my apartment. So I "lagered" it at 80 (!). Lots of corn...

    My trip to the Hallertau

In 2004 I loaded up the whole family into a VW bus and drove around Bavaria. We stopped by the Ayinger Brewery and stayed in the Brewery Guesthouse. We also discovered my Mom's cousin married a hop farmer and they graciously rolled out the red carpet for us. I created a little brewers...

How not to mash: a cautionary tale

I was very excited to fire up my SABCO "Brew-Magic" RIMS for the first time in 10 years yesterday. I made a Biere de Garde styled after Markowski's "Artisanal" in Farmhouse Ales. It was a single-step infusion at 150 deg. for 75 min. Overall my brew day went very smoothly, considering how...

This and $3 will get me a cup of coffee

Turns out I live down the road from ASCO (Automatic Switch Company). Been driving by for years without giving it a second thought. Now that I've researching brew stand automation I had a "hey, wait a minute" moment today. I suppose I should sit at the entrance in a lawn chair and hope some...

    Basement Brewery Project

THE SPACE. When we built our house I had the contractor fully excavate the area under the porch to make an brewing room off the basement. Now, a year later, I'm finally getting around to setting the thing up. The ceiling is insulated and cement block separates it from the rest of the...

240 volt element at 120 volts?

any reason i can't use a water heater element rated for 240 volts on a 120v line? I figure the element is just a highly resistant wire. it will get less hot with less juice but it will still work and won't burn out. The same should apply for a stove top element. Am I missing something? Thanks.

upgrades to 1st gen sabco brewmagic RIMS

Howdy! I have recently pulled my first gen SABCO RIMS out of mothballs and am looking to upgrade it. It has single orifice jet burners for heat boost under three tanks and a simple temp. controller and water heater element to stabilize mash recirc. temps. The gas burners and valves that...

Morristown, NJ - Geezer back from the dead

I started brewing in 1986 on an apt. stove with Grandpa's prohibition recipe. I evolved to using a SABCO RIMS by 1997. I went to several AOB conferences back in the early 90s and hung out on the HBD list. Then life changed and I moved back to an apartment and didn't have the will to go back...
