What can I do with this? Recipe advice needed.

So, I ordered the Pumpkin Ale kit from Austin Homebrew. Much to my dismay, the kit does not come with pumpkin of any sort - which is a problem for two reasons. 1. They don't advertise that you will need to go to the store when you buy the kit... and their kits are usually complete. Its annoying...

Orange Clove Beer for Fall - recipe help needed

I know I have had commercial brews that had orange and clove flavors in them, yet a google search gives me 0 hits when i try to find a home grain bill with it. I am new to the ad lib brewing (putting together recipes) but can follow directions pretty well. Any chance someone has done a recipe...

Hmmmm... Is it even worth it to brew now?

So, I ordered an all grain kit from my AHB. Because I couldn't brew right away, I decided to get unmilled. When I found out that a certain female owner at a certain LHBS refuses to mill my grains despite spending gobs-o-cash there, I tried to do it myself via a rolling pin. It went well, for the...

Indy - Anywhere to get my grain milled?

Planning on brewing tomorrow, but my bill is unmilled. Will Great Fermentations do this for me? If so, how much? If not, anyone in the area wanna help me out with this? Ill float a couple bucks your way...

    Tarnished Wort Chiller?

I am noticing that my wort chiller is becoming tarnished in random places. Probably oxidation from my hands? Thoughts? Is this normal? Is it still usable?

Immediate help needed! I don't have a carboy cap that fits.

I went to a new store, and picked out a 6.5 gallon carboy and the cap they advertised that fits. Got it home, and silly me for not checking because the sucker don't fit. Now I have a batch of beer sitting in the fermenter with nothing to seal contaminants out. Ideas? Thanks.

    Belgian Pils Malt Substitution

I screwed up a batch, and need to rebuy my grain bill. On it, it has Belgian Pils Malt, but my LHBS doesn't carry it. Adequate substitutions?

What happens if my iodine test fails?

So, I have let the grains steep for an hour or so inmy mash tun. When I poured it out, my iodine test failed to test the conversion. Let it sit or try something new?

    Swamp Cooling?

So, maintaining a constant temperature in my house is something the fiance is constantly nagging me about. I don't have a fridge capable of handling a fermenter, but I do have a guest bathroom. I read somewhere that if I fill the tub up, and wrap a towel around it so that the bottom of the...

    Simple question about yeast.

So, I am wondering how long the yeast stays alive after fermentation has stopped. As I do not plan on kegging, I need the yeast to be alive at bottling. Most of the recipes I read say 10/10 days in primary/secondary even though 90% of the batches I have done, the hydrometer balances out on day 7...

Has anyone tried AHS's Honey Hibiscus Wit?

Its one of their seasonals now, and it sounds really refreshing actually. Just wondering if anyone has anything good or bad to say about it?

    How much head room?

So, I am mainly doing 5 gallon batches. However, one comes along every so often that yields 5.25 gallons. Is a 6 gallon carboy good enough, or should I go to 6.5 gallon? Thanks.

Mash and Lauter - Combined or Seperate?

So, I have seen the converted coolers for Mash and Lauter tuns. I have even seen a few that are dual purpose (designed to do both at once). What is the general consensus here? Fermentation Trap has a Mash Tun that they sell for 100. Then they have an all grain kit with includes a mash tun and...

Stupid Question - how long will a kit last?

So, there is a particular kit that is seasonal via Austin Homebrew. If I ordered like three while they are still available, does anyone know how long they will keep? Notes: I am doing Full Grain milled currently.

Took some time off and reevaluated...

So... I quit brewing recently. After a string of bad batches, I got really really angry and sort of just took my toys and went home with them. I was doing extract modifications with horiffic results and just got fed up with it. I managed to sell my stuff for $300 on Craigslist and I sort of just...

    Everything must go... (Indianapolis, IN)

So, I have basically become fed up with the hobby. It seems like I cant catch onto the secrets of making things right. I have tried numerous times, read the books, studied the internet, and asked questions on this site. Despite following the advice, my beer still comes out over carbonated, under...

Any Harry Potter Fans out there want to help me with this?

So, my neighbor came up to me and told me that she wants to have a Harry Potter party in anticipation of the final movie this year. While I enjoyed the books, I am not to the level of geekery that is required for me to enjoy a themed party as an adult. Now that I have spoken that disclaimer, on...

To disturb, or not to disturb?

So, I am making a clone of Southern Tiers Creme Brulee Stout. The recipe calls for 9 pounds of DME. With about 18 hours into primary, there is about 2 inches of sediment on the bottom of my fermenter. Id imagine that this is all fermentable material as there are only 2 ounces of hops in the...

::sigh:: I feel if another batch is ruined...

I tried modifying a Brewer's Best kit and making it more personal, and the result is something that can be defined as not beer. I used the Dunkelweizen kit and racked it on top of a 750 ml bottle of malibu banana, and the flavor's just are not there. The beer is not bad, but it is... odd...

D'oh! Teabag remnant left in fermenter.

So, I am looking at my mead today, and I saw what appeared to be a piece of chicken fat laying on the top. After a closer look, I realized that it is part of a teabag that made its whay through my syphon - a VERY small peice. 2 months in, do we think this will be a problem? The "wort" was...
