    Yeast starter advice

Just decided to brew on Saturday. Brewing this Saturday so we won't pitch the yeast until late Saturday afternoon/evening. Using White Labs 001 yeast on a stirplate. Just boiled a pint of water with 1/2 cup of DME. Would you recommend adding any more DME between now and then? Any other...

Bells Two Hearted turned black after dryhop

This has been sitting in a keg for about a month now. Forgot to dry hop when initially kegged. Without the dry hopping the beer was very similar in color to the original. Dry hopped today and poured a pint and it was black! However, it smelled ok. I didn't pour any today prior to dry...

Pliny the elder clone and dextrose

In the "150 Classic Clone Recipes" in the best of brew your own magazine, the ingredient list for Pliny the Elder calls for 1.0 lb of dextrose (corn sugar). This is listed right under the grains and right before the hops. Then, it lists 0.75 cups of corn sugar (for priming). When is the first...

    Dual regulator needed?

Just got into kegging and currently have a 5# tank with one ball lock keg with one regulator and a picnic tap. I would like to add another keg to the fridge. Do I need a dual regulator or is there another option?

Orange Carboy Cap and blow off

We recently brewed a clone recipe for green flash west coast ipa. I have it fermenting in a glass carboy with the orange plastic cap on top with a blow off tubing going into a jar of sanitized water. We brewed this about 3 weeks ago. Krausen has formed on top but there has been no...

    starter overflow

I thought this might happen. First time I did a large starter (2000mL) and overnight it overflowed. Thank goodness I had it in a large container however I lost what looks to be about 200mL. The overflow solidified in the bottom of my large container that the stirplate was in. I am afraid I...

    Wyeast Starter

Do I need to smack the Wyeast pack and let it swell up first before pitching into a starter I am going to put on a stir plate until Friday or can I go ahead and just dump it into the starter after breaking the inner package and shaking it up?

    Clean hops before using?

Is there a step in cleaning hops before using them? After growing any bugs/dirt/bird poo/neem oil that might still have residue on them I would be hesitant to use unless there was some sort of cleaning process?

    Mash Temperature with Thermapen

Last we brewed a few weeks ago we used a thermapen to check the mash and we kept getting different readings in different parts of the mash tun. We use a converted keg (keggle) for our mash tun. Readings were up to 8 degrees off in spots even after stirring really well and letting it sit for a...

    Too early to start starter?

Plan on brewing the end of this month Friday 8/30/13. Plan on doing the Green Flash West Coast IPA clone and using WLP001. I would like to make a starter this week. Can I keep it on the stirplate until day before brew day (~3 weeks) and then cold crash in the fridge the day before?

    Keep adding wort to yeast?

I've had a stirplate going with the dregs of a 6 pack of Bells Amber yeast going for a couple weeks now. I just added about 2 more cups of wort last night to bring the flask to a little over 1200mL of liquid. We are brewing Saturday. Can I add more wort tonight and then refrigerate tomorrow...

    Starter and Stirplate

    1. I used the yeast from the dregs of a 6 pack of Bells amber and currently have it on my stir plate. I have stepped it up once and it has been going since Monday. Since I grabbed the yeast from the bottles, do I need to do any sort of yeast washing prior to using this yeast or can I just...

Harvesting yeast from Bells Amber bottles

Plan on trying to brew this friday and just made a starter with 1/2 cup of DME mixed with 1/2 quart of water and the yeast from one bottle of Bells Amber. Have it in a flask on a stir plate which looks to amount to 300-400mL of liquid. 1. Should I add the yeast from more than one of the...

    Teflon on CO2 tank?

Should I put this on the metal threaded connection between my CO2 tank and the regulator in addition to the plastic washer that goes in between the two?

    Mold?

Brewed our last batch some time about a year ago. Been sitting in the carboy in the lower part of my house. Yes its been a year. I just kegged it but am wondering if there could be any traces of mold in it and unsafe to drink? Or will the alcohol in it prohibit mold growth? We're thinking...

    Carbonating keg before cold

So the directions say to chill the beer in the keg before adding the CO2. Does it really matter?

Can I cut my hop roots (rhizomes) to split up?

I have my hops in large pots. I have had them now for three years so the roots are fairly well established (pop up in tons of places out of the pots). This year I would like to move some to different areas but also want to keep the ones I have where they currently are. Can I dig up the roots...

Any tricks to keep mash at 154?

We use a 15.5 keggle with a false bottom as our mash tun. We preheat the mash water to about 170 and then add the grains. We then take the keggle off the burner, put it on my concrete patio and then wrap it with a quilt and secure it with bungees around both the top and bottom. We have even gone...

How long can yeast starter stay on stir plate?

We are planning on brewing this Friday. Planning on making the yeast starter today. It might rain Friday here and delay our brewing until next Friday. How should we handle the yeast starter on the stir plate if we are delayed until next Friday? Keep it, refrigerate, etc? Thanks
