Yooper - this thread's for you

Knowing that you're a big Redwings fan, what will you be drinking for the finals? Or will you be at the game drinking commercial swill? On every other occasion I usually support the Wings, but being from Pittsburgh originally and learning to play hockey trying to emulate the Penguins players, I...

    Pitching temp vs fermentation temp

Normally, after a run thru the CFC my wort - this being Florida- is around 80 degrees. I take the carboy inside for a while to let the A/C do it's stuff, and I'm usually pitching around 75 degrees. I then use the bathtub as a swamp cooler to achieve a lower fermentation temp. My question...

    Bottle carbonated commercial beers

Which American craft beers are naturally carbonated? Is it supposed to be listed on the bottle somewhere? Is there a list on this forum that I missed? People talk about harvesting yeast from bottles. Would be pretty difficult if the beer wasn't bottle carbonated first. I know Sierra Nevada...

Perfect Beer for the Divorce/Final Alimony Party

Started this thread from Irr81765 's reply on the "Pilots who are avid brewers" thread. Depending on what caused the break-up, could be: Ruination IPA or Liberation Ale. If I was a homebrewer at the time of my divorce it would have been Liberation. Others??

    Kettle Drilling Site

I'm planning on adding a stainless spigot I got from NB to my boil pot. How far up from the bottom is a good distance to locate it? Anything I should know about before drilling out the SS pot?

    Mash Tun Thermal Mass

I was looking at the members' gallery and saw a picture of one of the brew calculators. Don't know which it's from since I don't have either BrewSmith or ProMash. It was the Dough In Mash Strike Temp Page, and at the top of the column there was an entry space for "Mash Tun Thermal Mass". Does...

    Pacman yeast

Does anyone use Pacman for anything other than Dead Guy? Anyone know the actual specific characteristics of this yeast? I have an extra pack that I was going to make starters with and store in the fridge. Just wondered what the results would be with recipes other than Dead Guy. Only thing I...

    Sparkling vs carbonated

Is there a difference between carbonated and sparkling? I bottle carbed a portion of my AW with carb tabs. I sampled a bottle the other night and it was plenty carbed, but when I poured, I got a small head on it rather than just continual bubbles like a sparkling wine. Does making something...

    Mash Out

I understand the process of the mash out - to shut down the enzymes. A recipe called for mash out at 170 for 10 minutes. My first batch sparge was 170. Wouldn't the addition of the 170 sparge water accomplish the same thing? Or would you want to mash out before you drained the 1st runnings...

    pre-boil measurements

The wort coming out of the tun is 153 F. Do you correct for temp for the gravity? The on-line conversion I used only corrects up to 120.

    Home brewing and Kiteboarding

Wanted to see if there was anyone who was into kiteboarding as well as home brewing. I'm a kiteboarder who has fairly recently gotten into homebrewing.

    Firearms afficionados

Any handgun fanciers out there. Looking to see if anyone has had the chance to shoot/evaluate the Springfield 9mm XD sub-compact, or the Ruger LCP .380.

    Need more mouthfeel

How do brewers of stouts get that "chewy" mouthfeel? I tasted my oatmeal stout, now in the bottle for two weeks, and it seems a little thin. My stout has good aroma and taste. I just wished it tasted a little thicker. I thought that the oatmeal was supposed to contribute to this attribute...

Still Another First All Grain Brew Thread

I finally got my cooler mash tun not to leak and it was just sitting there, all dressed up and no place to go. So......I brewed my first AG, a Honey Weizen, single mash. Don't know if this is the right form, but here goes. Target gravity: 1.048 Batch size: 5 gallons Boil time: 1 hour...

    Rectangular False Bottom

Anyone ever make a false bottom for a rectangular cooler mash tun? All you hear about is the circular kind. The corners could be tricky, but with a good template, could be done. I wondered this while I was constructing my copper manifold.

    User Name Change

I recently (in forum time) changed my avatar and the sub title to my user name to reflect my conditioned response of craving a home brew while perusing the forum. Hence - Pavlov's Dog. Today, I thought that the user name Pavlov's Dog would suit me more than brew-skies - designed to reflect my...

    Leaking mash tun

I just finished my mash tun - Coleman Extreme Cooler - as per instructions in the DIY section. Problem is no matter what combination of fender washers, neoprene washers, O-rings, plumbers tape, I still get a minor drip. The last combination worked best with using the gasket on the inside that...

    DFH Apricot IPA

I was at the local brew store this afternoon and picked up some DFH 90 and saw some new beer from DFH. Apricot IPA. Now, I love their IPAs and I love apricots, so I bought a bottle and put it in the fridge. Just opened the bottle. Good color, nice creamy head, good aroma, then the first taste...

    Water for All-Grain

I am used to using Spring Water for extract and partial mashes. But now with AG, it seems like it would get rather tedious with the amount of water needed, let alone more expensive. Does anyone use spring water in AG or is it right out of the tap? Haven't yet built my tap filter.

    All Electric Mashing System

anybody use this set up? Not sure what it's made of - teflon I think. Saw it on highgravitybrew.com They sell a whole home brewery set up. All electric mashing system. The mash tun is fairly unique in that the false bottom sits on a ledge and no chance of liquid channeling between the false...
