Where to age a Barley Wine?

Just finished a 5 gal barley wine. Had a great OG (1.092) I've never brewed one and was just wondering where you guys age your BW's. Do you leave it in primary? Secondary? Chill and leave in the fridge? Thanks a lot!

    March Pump Woes.....

Ok...WTF??? For several batches now, I've had multiple loss of prime issues with the pump when recirc during heat application to the mash tun, or during vorlauf. (My MLT is a 10gal Blichmann and the silicone tubing is connected with brass QD's). Intitally I assumed my flow was too high during...

    Saving the yeast cake?

I'm really sick of dumping the yeast cake after I rack to secondary. It seems like such a waste. Can I transfer it to a sanitary container, pop it in the fridge and later, use it as a starter?

Crash cooling after 2 days in 2nd ?

So I'm sitting here, layed up after losing a wrestling match with a chainsaw, and was doing a bit of reading (Dave Miller's Homebrewing Guide). He suggests that, maturation of ales of normal gravity, isn't required...aside from a day or two in secondary. He suggests crash cooling the beer...

    Re-pitch?

I brewed a 5 gal batch of an Irish Red Ale (AG) yesterday, breaking in the new single tier rig I built. The yeast I requested (Wyeast Activator Pack of American Ale 1056) was left out of the order. I have a vial of White Labs California Ale 001 in the fridge from a previously screwed up order...

    Pitching White Labs

I really like to use Activator Packs, due to the visual confirmation of yeast viability. When using White Labs vials, do you guys feel comfortable simply pitching the yeast from the vial, or do you pitch a starter?

    AG Raspberry Red Ale Quandary

Just got the AG kit from Midwest, read the little info sheet that came with it and it says to add the raspberry at kegging. Do all flavored beers get the "flavor" at keg/bottling time? This is the first go at a flavored beer (as if beer isn't wonderfully flavored enough). I thought I'd give...

    Serving a Stout.....

How many of you guys actually use a stout faucet and nitro to serve your stouts? I'm tossing around getting the equipment to do it but I'm still on the fence.

15gal Blichmann or keggle for MLT?

What would you guys rather use and why?

    My bar.....in memorium.

I've been looking at some of your posts on man caves, bars and the like and felt it nessesary to post pics of mine, since I can't belly up to it anymore. I completely remodeled the basement of our old house and built what I consider to be a pretty sweet bar. We moved after buying another...

    The single tier build.

I had a pretty productive few days. I don't have the plumbing figured out yet, but the structure is complete, so I guess the hard part is done. Here's a couple pics of the last few days labor. :rockin:

    Sanke Woes

A buddy of mine just called and told me he had a second sanke half barrel of Boulevard wheat that his coupler didn't mate to correctly (I.E. loosely. allowing beer/gas leakage at the ball valve) He has never had issues like this with any other beer and like me has had scores of half barrels...

Efficiency increases while using a recirculating MLT?

Guys, I'm in the process of building my single tier and plan on using one March pump, restricting me to batch sparging. My questions to those run the same set up... 1) During the mash and sparge, when do you start your recirc? 2) Have you encountered a greater efficiency using the recirc...

    Making a recirculating keg MLT...

Hi guys. I'm working on getting my single tier rig figured out and want to incorperate a recirculating keg MLT. From your experience for those of you that use RKMLT's, what configuration works best? IE: bulkhead/temp probe position and return bulkhead position and configuration? The MLT will...

    .....hypothetically......

What would one expect their brew to taste like if one sampled it after 2 weeks in primary, freshly racked to a keg and burst carbinated at 30PSI x 8 hrs....with frequent shaking? Would it be common of said brew to taste like.... well.....@$$? Not that the author would ever do such a thing!:D...

Any household replacements for keg lube?

Hey guys....In my haste to get my kegs ordered, I forgot to include keg lube. I have the kegs torn down, cleaned and sanitized. Are there any substitutions for said lube that I might have lying around the house? Thnx!

First batch going to the keg...need force carbination help....

Hi guys. I appearently had success, thus far, with my first batch, 10 gal all-grain, wheat (Boulevard Wheat Clone). This Saturday will be 2 weeks in primary and I'm planning to go straight to the keg since secondary won't likely clear a beer that is hazy by nature. My biggest fear is...

First brew ever, a 10gal all grain.

Hi guys, I'm new here... and new to brewing....an old hat at drinking however :) I converted two kegs to a HLT and a boil kettle, converted a 60qt Ice Cube to an MLT with copper manifold and fabricated an immersion chiller. The system appearently worked the way it was supposed to. I brewed...
