    This looks like bad news

a tiny matte looking swirl just formed on the top of my beer in secondary overnight. I'm pretty positive that it's an infection although it's very tiny just yet. It doesn't appear to be anything from the hop bag. It looks like something might be trying to grow. It's in a glass carboy so I can't...

    Can I still pick hops?

It's Nov 2nd! I might have a place to pick some hops for free, but it's a ways away for me (and gas is pricey and I hate hate hate driving anywhere). Do you think it's worth driving to look at the hops or do you think they're toast by now? I don't think we've had a freeze yet here in Seattle. I...

    classification. . .

So, I was going to make a pretty hoppy ale á la IPA-ish, but I realized that my 2lb Caramunich addition BLASTED my beer's colour from 9° to 20°, a dark brown. Can this still be an IPA, technically, if the colour is so severely dark? If not, what style would it fall into for all of that dark...

    Just bought:

2oz NUGGET y 2oz GLACIER Anyone combined em? I'm doing a Rye IPA, light on the rye—a little bit caramel-ey—with a projected 1.085 OG. I want to hear all of your ideas on how to schedule them! I'm new to both of them so lend some input!! I actually chose them from the package...

Threw together some extracts. . . OG?

While I am building my AG set-up, I decided to throw together some extracts that were given to me. They were: 3.3lb LME Pilsen Light, 4lb Cooper's LME "lager", 1lb DME. I also steeped a few grains for flavour and colour (which turned out to be too much colour). They were roughly equal portions...

    Oaking

I wonder if Jack Daniel's oak chips (for BBQ) could be used to oak a beer in secondary?

    Hitachino Next XH

Ridiculously good beer. If you haven't had it, you must. Because I have no idea what Shochu tastes like, or it's casks, I cannot isolate the flavours in this one. Does anyone have any idea what might've gone into the XH for it's strange fruits and leathers? It's not all cask that's responsible...

    Temperatures

What is the approximate temperature of 5 gals of fluid vs ambient temperature? Fluids tend to stay slightly cooler, don't they? I'm in the northwest and it's been 40-50 outside which might translate a little through the floorboards(?), but on the other hand the fermentation process generates...

Beginning partial grain brew. Lots of questions here.

I'm looking to make a rough india pale ale. I prefer a utilitarian beer with enough water to be refreshing. I've carefully selected my grains for specific characteristics as I'm attempting my first partial grain/extract brew. I picked out a total of 1.5oz of specialty grains, one pound of dry...
