    Please Help w/ Starter

This is my first time doing a starter, and I planed on using an Activator smack pack. I put 2/3 cup DME into just less than 1 qt water. Took my eyes off from it for a secong and it boiled over. I ended with about half a quart of wort to use for the starter....threw it in the fridge to cool...

    Infection question

Greetings all. Just wanted to get your opinion on something. I opened my fermenter last night to keg my porter and noticed two quarter sized "bubbles" that did not look like the typical small bubblescaround them (few tiny bubbles from moving the fermenter). These two were much larger and had...

    Dry hopping with whole cones:(

So I dry hopped my harvest IPA with whole cone hops picked and dried about two weeks ago. Much to my disapointment, my beer now tastes INCREDIBLY grassy....to the point that it is unpleasant. I dry hopped and then kegged and threw an ounce of hops in the keg too.....tasted it today, and while it...

    Yellow Lager...what do you think?

I want to make a yellow lager that will be good for the warmer weather.....something with a clean, dry finish with a little bit of hops showing through. What do you guys think about the recipe below? Any changes to the yeast? 10.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (1.8 SRM) Grain 83.33 % 2.00 lb...

    Wyeast Kolsch slow to start?

So it's been 24 hours now and nothing out of the air lock. When I shine a flashlight on top of the primary (so I can see in a bit)....doesn't even look like a krausen is forming (which is actually what concerns me). Anyone else have a slow start with this yeast.....thoughts on repitching. Oh...

    Evaporation rate?

So my first all grain is done. Pictures below. What kind of evaporation rate do you guys usually have to deal with? I lost a lot more than I expected. Also, my efficiency was way off...only like 55%. Pretty sad. I was a little on the hot side at mash in, my first temp. measurement was 159...

    Brewhouse Efficiency

As I contemplate my FIRST all grain recipe (will be brewing once my new brew pot arrives) and familiarize my self with Beesmith....I wonder what brewhouse effeciency is at least safe to assume that I can achieve?? Looking back at some of my partial mashes and entering the results into Beersmith...

    Advice on new Brew Kettle

So, I'm gonna have to take the plunge into all grain.....the only real thing holding me back is an inability to do large volume boils. I'm now in the market for a new brew kettle. Any advice on size and brand?? I know that I want one with a ball valve....that's an absolute must.

    Bottling a Belgian

I want to bottle my Belgian that is at 12%ABV. My problem is that my Belgian yeast can only tolerate about 12%ABV. If a add 2/3 cup corn sugar (Belgian has been conditioning for about 4 months now), will I get appropriate carbonation? Do I need to add yeast? Perhaps champagne yeast or other...

    Problem with tap handles

I've noticed that if I don't drink any beer during the week, when I go to pour a beer on say Friday night, the tap handles are very difficult to move/difficult to open the tap. It's like I have to "break them free" if I haven't used them for several days. After I put a little muscle into...

    Slow Sparge??

Brewed last night and it took me forever to sparge. At first I thought I had a stuck sparge. Then I was able to get some small amount of fluid to drain very slowly. Wow....was up until 6 am waiting for the sparge to finish. I use a false bottom and I'm now thinking about changing the set up...

    Stuck sparge help

First time brewing with my new false bottom....round screen type that draws fluid from underneath the screen. The flow out of it was not that great without any grains. No flow at all with the grain bed. It was terrible....had to use a pasta strainer to recover. Anyone out there have problems...

    Rochfort 10 clone

I will need to eventually start thinking about bottling my Rochfort 10 clone. Does anyone have any experience in bottling beers that are close to 12% ABV. Do I need to re-pitch some yeast? If so...should I use the abby yeast (only tolerates about 12% ABV) or should I consider some other type...
