    Lager bottling

So, I brewed a dopplebock and am going to bottle soon. Of course I will add yeast to the bucket but here's the thing...I have a pile -almost a full pint - of the yeast I used for fermentation that I saved from primary (let it settle -washed and sanitized jars - poured off wort and then poured...

    Thermometers

Through the years of all grain brewing, I have used and thrown out several thermometers of various styles. The last batch I brewed I could not get three (3) different thermometers to agree and either undershot or overshot my mash temp - significantly. I am tired of trying on my own, to find a...

    Ale vs Lager yeast

I brewed my first lager and built up a double 2000 ml starter for pitching. It took off within 6 hours but has now subsided. I used a blowoff tube (better safe than sorry) but there was no activity in the jug of star san - I mean no bubbling at all even though there was plenty of activity in the...

Wort on top of a Yeast cake?

Brewed a Doppelbock that turned out to be a disaster https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=601386 So I am going to brew this again - this time with the CORRECT INGREDIENTS and would like to use the yeast. The fermentation has stopped and so I was going to brew the new batch and rack...

    Can I do this/Should I do this

I got a clone recipe book for Christmas and thought I'd try my first lager - a doppelbock. Doubled a 2000ml starter.....everything went perfectly - until I took my first preboil gravity reading - not even close. Recipe said it should be near 7 - it was at 3. Added 1.7# of light DME (all I...

    Swa-2441 pid

I've looked through the posts and cannot find any information here on anyone using the Auber SWA2441 PID. I've been given a couple of them and wondered if they'll work for a control panel or if they're junk for brewing. Thanks.

    Fermentation vessel

I have an opportunity to pick up (2)cylinders 52"tall by 12" dia. Each will hold 25 gallon. They were used as water softeners. If I don't cut them in half and remanufacture them and use them as is, would there be a problem with having too much head space if I only put 5 or 10 gallon in them...

    #of cells

Am brewing a SMaSH with 16# of Belgian pilsner and nugget hops. OG looks like it's going to come in right around 1.080. I want to try the Danstar Abbaye dry yeast but am unsure if I should use 1pack - 2pack - or make a starter. The best info comes from this forum as the product info is...

    The boil

What effect will it have on the final wort if I split the boil into (2) 2.5 gallon boils indoors instead of (1) 5 gallon outside?

    Barrel Aging

I have volunteered to head the beer tent committee at our annual OKTOBERFEST. As such, I've got some ideas - one of which is to have the festival buy a small 5 or 10 gallon oak barrel to fill with home brewed beer to use in a "tapping of the keg" ceremony. Does anyone out there have any good...

    Quick Question

If a beer tastes too sweet before bottling, will bottle conditioning help it or will it remain too sweet?

    Opinions Please. Can I/Should I........?

OK.... All y'all to me, are the experts, so......let's say I'm still an impatient brewer and I pulled a beer out of primary and racked into secondary too early. When I secondaried, I racked on top of a quart of maple syrup and some yeast nutrient and made sure that I sucked out a little of the...

    Opinion please on secondary addition

Brewed a maple porter and the recipe calls for a quart of maple syrup in secondary. When I racked I purposely picked up a little of the yeast(WLP007) and racked on top of boiled and cooled syrup w/ a little yeast food. Airlock is bubbling but no krausen. Can I A$$ume that the yeast is chomping...
