FG for my IPA still far to high...

Hi, For some reason my last few homebrews have been 5-6 points too high for the FG. A Porter I did OG: 1062 but FG: 1021. BeerSmith said FG 1016. A Brown OG: 1044 but FG 1016. BeerSmith said FG 1014.(This one wasn't too bad) And one this IPA that I still have brewing, OG: 1061 but FG...

    Pellet Hops - Boil Timetable

Hi, Iv used pallet hops a number of times, but still don't REALLY know what times are best to use them in the boil. I usually base it on others recipes. Obviously the beer style is going to determine the hop timetable to a degree. For a bittering hop, say 10% AA or more, they are...

Poll: How do you determine how long in secondary?

Just wondering how everyone here determinds how long they leave their ALES in Secondary for? I know many people don't use a secondary for ales. Is it purely how patient you are? Or when you need the secondary for another beer? Or the style? How dark the beer is? If you were in no hurry...

Extract bewing - use corn sugar as well?

Hi, Iv done a few extract brews now with some success. In a homebrew book I read that you should use some sugar with all-extract brewing unless its a Porter/Stout. The reason given is that the yeast can't always fully ferment out the malt. The book said to use about 200g to 500g (4oz to...

Abbey Dubbel's - Easy to brew?

After going to a Belgium Beer Cafe, and having a Affligem Dubbel, iv been inspired to brew one! Is this easy to brew with extract/specialty grains? Iv only brewed a handful of IPA's and a Porter Brewing at the moment. Any recipes/tips would be nice. EG: do you use a really long secondary...

Big Beers - longer in primary/secondary?

Hi there, So far Iv only brewed beers that have been 1036-1045. I typically leave in primary for 2 weeks, then secondary for 2 weeks. Else leave in primary for 3-4 weeks and bottle. My current beer (porter) was 1062. After 5 days its only 1030 with safale-05 so it might take awhile to...

    Aerated beer when racking...

Stupid %&$*ing racking! Just racked my 2 weeks old beer to secondary. I used the spigot on the primary with a short tube. Which ever angle I put the tube in, bubbles kept coming. They aren't always big bubbles. The tube was only ever half beer half empty. Is there a trick to this? A lesson...

What specialty grains need to be crushed?

Hi - Quick question... I know you have to crush crystal whole grain before you steep it. Do you also need to crush chocolate whole grain and black patent whole grain before you steep it? Iv been told that since they are roasted its optional, and that they turn to dust if you crush...

Can someone please check my (porter) recipe...

Hi, Can someone please check this recipe before it gets the green light? Am doing a big 6.6 gal batch, as this will probably take a while to ferment. Am thinking adding the extract @ 60min and 15min will make the most of the hops. Would it be worth adding 0.5lbs chocolate grain also? Do...

Help for a 6 gal Porter Recipe

    Bottling straight from Secondary?

Firstly I should point out that my "secondary" is really a primary style one with a spigot and its plastic etc. The current beer is....(2x 1.7kg Coopers Draught Cans, 0.5 lbs Crystal Grain, 1oz 8.6% @ 15min, 1oz 8.6% @ 5min). It was in primary for 13days, and has now been in secondary for...

What formula is correct for calculating alc %?

    For Example: OG = 1036 FG = 1011 OK so the Coopers Book says this one: (OG-FG) / 7.46 (plus 0.5% for priming) So... (1036-1011)= 25 25/7.46 = 3.35% (or 3.85% after priming) Others use this one: (OG-FG) x131 So... (.036-.011)=0.025 0.025x131 = 3.27% If the OG was...

    Which hops go well together?

Hi, For my next brew, im wanting to use more then one hop type to give more complex hop flavour. Last time I used just "NZ Hallertau ", 3/4 to 1oz 60min and 3/4 to 1oz 15min. While this beer was decent, the Hallertau taste was strong and kinda overpowering. Im thinking some hops go well...

Thinking about getting a secondary fermenter...

Am thinking about getting another primary fermenter to use as a secondary. At the moment, when I prime the bottles im using carb drops, as I don't wanna disturb the yeast in primary if I mix in the sugar. I probably wrong, but I think they are making the beer cloudy with lots of additional...

Hmm... I now have about 60x 750mL bottles homebrew but only 1 bottle is drinkable/ready... What exported beers are worth sampling, something new? Any recommendations? I saw Warsteiner Premium Verum, 4.8% the other day, is it any good? Could always get a good ole Heinekin or Carlsberg or...

    Yeast in the Bottle

Hi - Iv got a couple of questions about yeast cakes :-) 1) Once people have bottled their beer, and it is allowed to carbonate (1-2 weeks on average say), how long is it usually before the yeast forms a hard yeast cake? 2) Does lager yeast take longer to form a hard yeast cake compared to...
