    I'm going to enter some beer at this years Iowa State Fair and had a question about what catagory i should enter my Chocolate Milk Stout. enter it in the stout category as a Sweet Stout or Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer or Specialty Beer?

    Excessive Boil Off

    just wondering if anyone has experienced this. brewed outside a month ago the air temp was about 20 degrees, boiled like i always do but instead of boiling off my typical 1.25 gallons in 60 min i lost 3 gallons! had to top off with 2.5 gallons. typically start the boil with 6.5 -7.5 gallons...

    chocolate milk stout

    this is the northern brewer kit and will be racking to secondary on 4 oz cacoa nibs in 1 week. n.b. says to just dump nibs into carboy and rack on top. is there a risk of infection? i typcially don't do secondary.

    Just thought i'd post about the 5th annual Beers To You And Gourmet Too in Waterloo, IA on Feb, 26 2012. this years guest speaker is Bob Cannon from Samuel Adams Boston Brewery. And for the first time they will be conducting a homebrew contest. Always a great time. great food paired with great beer.

    Rice hull question

    Going to brew an all grain pumpkin beer this weekend and will be using rice hulls in the mash for the first time. do you just throw them in the mash as is, do they need to be crushed? to be honest i have never seen rice hulls and the LHBS does not carry them. ordered all my ingredients today.

    sparge question?

    i batch sparge and have only done one all grain batch so far. my question is after i do my first runnings and then add my sparge water for second and possibly third runnings, after the water is added and everything is stirred do i need to let it sit awhile or can i start draining it right away...
